annuity rate- why it's rising now?

Apr 29, 2008 6 Replies

Hi can anybody explain me why annuity rate (joint life, level) is rising for the last half a year? Does it have sense to wait a bit with buying annuity until it start dropping back? Thanks

It is because your fund is more attractive to them. Have you looked carefully at the rules of your scheme, you may be entitled to a guaranteed annuity rate (GAR). Your pension provider won't may not have noticed this.

It is nothing to do with my fund. I am talking about the quote for the best annuity rate from FT Your money, which publish it every Saturday. So there ought to be another reason. Maybe these companies also have problem with cash due to credit crunch?

I thought annuity rates were linked to long-term gilt rates. Or maybe what with the weather, no England in Euro 2008, food and fuel prices etc people are losing the will to live. That helps too.

looked

noticed this.

Saturday.

Or for the idiot version (which appeals to me for obvious reasons), Adam Shaw of Working Lunch did a simplified explanation together with an interview of the person mentioned in the above link.

Because interest rates are going up, whatever the Bank of England may say otherwise.

You want high annuity rates.
