chip and pin

I'm off to USA in two weeks, does the new chip and pin apply over there to UK credit/debit cards?

Thanks,

Roland.

No. The US has absolutely no plans to implement EMV.

Definitely?? - I'm sure I had to use my PIN when I went there last year.

No but take your driving licence or passport (picture ID) with you when ever you make large purchases. We were asked mainly at the malls, restaurants were usually ok. If you are driving you have to carry your driving licence anyway and if you look under 30 expect to be asked to produce when drinking alcohol.

I guess that applies to women only, since if they look under 30 there's a good chance they might be under 21.

SWMBO is thirty something and got challenged about her age in a pub. Before this, I had always thought there were rules about allowing staff to drink.

Sorry, I don't follow what you mean by this comment at all!

I think he means the barman must have been drunk to think he could flatter her by pretending to think she was a teenager.

Where did you get that from??? It's more difficult not having a pin in the US as you have to carry id around with you if you don't - particulalrly in the stires but not so m uch in restaurants

By that reasoning all the 'Smart VISA' cards currently being issued in NA will disappear in a puff of logic.

How so? There are no plans to support EMV in the USA. This means that you will not be requested to enter a PIN to support your transaction with an EMV card. It has no bearing on whatever other schemes the US implement independently of EMV.
