ICICI Bank UK

Any views on the above bank which is Indian but has a separate UK set-up? FSA authorised. 5.15% interest on internet instant access savings.

Best instant access interest rate I can find, but little known in the UK.

Mind you, I had concerns about ING when I first placed my savings with them!

Do a search on here, and you'd find good and bad. That said, early teething troubles led to some bad press, but most of these are ironed out. I'm a customer, and I'm still with them. Their web site (the secure area) is not that good, so things like regular deposits are not easy to manage if you are used to doing things the way every other internet savings site does it.

Thanks for that Ian. I have opened an account with them and was on the point of transferring money from ING to them (via my current account) but began to get cold feet! I think I'll go ahead however.

Like you I had heard good and bad about Icici until something happened to me which I found very worrying. To cut a long story short.... I transferred via Icici 25k from my current account to the Hisave account in early January 06. This occurred successfully until I noticed that the Hisave had been credited with 25k, but it had not been debitted from my current account.

3 secure emails to Icici later they acknowledged what had happened but did not do anything about it!

As of today 7 months later I am still 25k better off than I should be!

I do remember someone on here saying it happened to them.... it doesnt take much imagination to see that their auditors at year end must have a hell of a job explaining that away!.... I dont want to be a scaremonger but I think its another BCCI in the making, despite the good rate.

I had major problems getting access to the small amount I had initially ago, I bit the bullet and asked them to completely reset the security settings on the online access, which they did very efficiently, and now I'm quite content that everything is running smoothly. Teething troubles I imagine.

I don't understand why they never feature in the newspaper (or on-line) best-buy tables.

Strange that you should say that! Last Friday I set up a transfer (via the ICICI web site) of 10k from my current account to the HiSave account. I do intend to transfer some more but just wanted to be sure that the transfers were going through ok. For the past few days my ICICI account is showing a credit balance of 10,000.01 despite the fact that the 10k is still sitting in my current account and has not yet been transferred.

I do note that the ICICI account states that in can only withdraw 1.00 (the initial opening amount), so I can only assume that they show the transfer immediately you arrange it - but the credit only becomes available for withdrawal (and for accruing interest) from when it actually arrives in the account.

It's a strange way of doing things and I can't say that I feel entirely happy about matters!

Actually, they have been appearing recently in the Daily Mail's 'Best Home For Your Money' tables.

If you pay a cheque in, it will show on the account immediately, and go out of the other account a few days later.
