FTSE DAC and CAC just leapt up, all at the same time. No significant news events to cause it that I can see. Is it computer software algorithms simultaneously reacting (wouldn't they be set to react mostly to individual stocks?), ECB or others intervening, or something else?

Ach, the PPT will be ready to save the day when the US opens. Crash helmets on though, just in case...

Oh, come on! So an investment of say 10,000 pounds is now worth 9,500 pounds or so -- not good but hardly a 'meltdown'. Similar language being used by the BBC, but then they have to sex things up don't they?

It's not a big drop in the overall scheme of things. In fact, I'm not sure it's even the biggest drop this year.

Maybe not, but it puts more pressure on Final Salary pension funds, which is my only interest in shares now. The annual letters are talking gloomily about making up deficits and explaining that in case of the fund winding up they will have to pay into an insurance company. Like AIG?
