need ID document verified

I need to have a copy of my passport notarised or officially witnessed so that I can send it to a foreign bank. Does anyone know how to do this and how much it might cost. I'm not sure whether the average solicitor can act as a notary or whether I can get an official stamp somewhere. I tried my local Police Station but they said they don't do that sort of thing although I thought that they would be the obvious candidate.

Any help appreciated.

A notary public is probably what you want. Many but not all solicitors are notaries public, and not all NPs are solicitors. Last (well, the only) time I needed an NP to witness something I looked in the yellow pages, ISTR there was one in Palmerston Place, and IIRC he charged a nominal fiver.

If the foreign country in question should happen to have a consulate here, take it there.

Perhaps having it winessed by a professional person of some standing is enough. Try your GP or a minister (of the church, of course, not of government, I did say "some standing").

In the UK, IFAs can do this. Ask one. He probably wouldn't charge you. Likely he's doing this a couple of times a day for UK ID purposes for his clients for anti-money laundering reasons. I'm not sure if this would be OK for a foreign bank, though.
