Wouldn't it be great if banks offered the facility to be sent an e-mail when your account had received a credit - so you don't have to log on each day to check.

Some do..
Cahoot, for instance, can be configured to send you e-mail alerts whenever a transaction happens on your account, while First Direct will send you a text message

Yes indeed but it arrives after such a delay that it's next to useless.
