and arsenic?...or is that given away?
and arsenic?...or is that given away?
Well is you like paying three thimes the price for something can I interest you in buying a second hand car?
Oh yes cars I forgot about how cheap they are in Europe, oh and then there is petrol too.
You are welcome to 1 a litre in an independant UK.
Europe I love you.
When a poster resorts to this, I think we are all aware which way the argument has gone!
Bitstring , from the wonderful person Tim said
Good in theory, but would you really want to live next to someone who couldn't afford to have their refuse collected, or was a galloping plague carrier, or whatever?
And I think it's a bit hard to expect 5 year olds to scrape up the required £100-a-week (or whatever) to pay for the schooling *they* use, especially when the law forbids them to sweep chimneys any more.

Now you're being silly - obviously, children's schooling would be paid for by their parents/guardians. Orphans don't go to school, as they're in the workhouse...
Actually I just checked and there is a 10 charge each way
20 in total :O( ( +50p outbound)However I can go out for 12.50 and back for 8 so thats 41, not too bad really.
Its a swine the tax is 50% of the cost, and I am not even a higher rate tax payer.
Actually I can do it for 31 in september including all taxes, cheaper than the coach!!

With some of the very low (silly) fares, the tax can be in excess of 100% of the fare.

Flying can be very cheap these days. AIUI, there's no duty on aviation fuel. Can you do it in one day?
No there isn't, otherwise every plane would refuel in the cheapest destination. (Probably Saudia Arabia). Petrol is also cheaper in Europe but I don't think I would get be allowed on the plane with a 5 gallon tank of unleaded!!!
I don't think I can do it in one day, I get the impression the return flight (on the same day) is actually the same plane returning. See below.
Flight 6563 departs Nottingham East Midlands at 14:45, arrives Cologne/Bonn at 17:10 flexible web fare 7.49 GBP (phone fare 12.49 GBP)
Flight 6564 departs Cologne/Bonn at 17:30, arrives Nottingham East Midlands at 18:00 flexible web fare 2.99 GBP (phone fare 7.99 GBP)
For some reason the outbound flight is always the most expensive.
It seems like they 'turn the plane' round in 20 minutes, (refuel and dump the old passengers and let the new ones board).
If this is the case I was thinking I might be able to actually stay on the plane. This would be OK if I could buy my duty free on the aircraft.
However I am unsure if duty free is sold on easy jet flights and even more unsure it would sell large quantities of rollling tobacco.
I also doubt I very much would be allowed to stay on the flight, I am sure there is some silly reason why this would not be possible, but not one I can think of. (petty bureaucracy nodoubt). As you have to check in 1/2 an hour before the flight leavng the plane would not be an option.
Unfortunately the nearest airport to me East Midlands and not many airlines use it, however Easyjet have started flying from there recently, hopefully they will add more destinations such as Belgium in the future. The other airlines flying from there are hopeless pricewise.
Travelling to say Manchester airport would probably cost me more than the flight it self. EMA is within cycling distance for me (on a good day).
Assuming I can save 2 a pack on 60 500g packs I have 120 to spent on travel. I wonder what my chances of getting though customs with for example twice the guidelines?
I have been through customs about 5 times before and never been stopped but i guess the chances increase if you are on a 'tobacco route' however Cologne would probably not fall into that category.
Anyway I will look at accomodation prices for a mini-break.
Gonna need an internet connection in the hotel though ;O)
I still find it hard to believe I can fly from Germany to the UK for 3!!!
I don't think I could get to Derby by coach (never mind the train) for that. It costs me 2 to go a mile into Nottingham and back, and they say they want people to use public transport!!
Actually EasyJet dont seem to fly from Manchester (or Birmingham), so I guess I am very lucky they do EMA.
They also fly to Prague, I hear things are dirt cheap there!! (Popular for stag nights I believe (50p a pint in a pub).

No chance. The reason aviation is so safe is because they take every safety precaution they can think off. On of which is to avoid (where possible) having passengers onboard when re-fuelling.
I doubt they carry much, if any. BTW - you can't bring Duty Free tobacco back to the UK, only Duty Paid, but you get to chose which Government's duty you want to pay.
See above.
Just idle curiosity but whereabouts are you?
I presume you mean 60 50g packs. Remember, in Germany they tend to be
40g packs. Compared to UK prices it's more like £4.00 a pack cheaper.Pretty good, I'd say. They might not like it but if you can advance a good argument for having that amount they'd probably accept it. Your not likely to be stopped anyway. Personally, I think 6 months supply is enough and it gives me an excuse to go abroad more often.
Customs are more interested in cars and vans bringing in vast quantities from places like Belgium and France (although I hear the price in France has increased a lot recently). It's not possible to bring in very large amounts as a foot passenger or by air so Customs don't bother those passengers very much.
I think it's worth it. You've got the URL to find hotels. Sorry I can't suggest anywhere in Köln - I've never been there.
65 years ago we were trying to keep the buggers out, now we're encouraging them with cheap air-fares.
Im in Nottingham

Right, when you mentioned "up north" earlier I inferred further North than that. I suppose East Midlands Airport is a little closer than Newcastle upon Tyne.
What about kids without parents or guardians - the workhouse?
There is nothing silly about it. These kinds of issues are very real problems (as any good history text will demonstrate). We take a system of central taxation and outlay for granted.
