Keystroke logging trojan horses + online banking

It is worrying that people do electronic banking on PCs which are potentially infected with trojan horses that log sites visited, passwords and user names.

I recommend PC users:-

1) be sure to have up-to-date antivirus software - check for new virus definitions regularly - every time you use your pc if possible (not more than once in a day though........) 2) make sure your PC is free of spyware - software that monitors your internet usage and feeds the results to an external site. You can scan it with free software from lavasoft called "ad-aware se"

(other free spyware removal tools are available eg

3) patch your pc using windows update (windowsupdate.microsoft.com) to install security patches (turn automatic updates on if you have XP) 4) be sure to have a firewall (built into windows xp but only enabled by default with XP SP2) 5) don't open e-mail attachments which you are not expecting - some viruses can pretend to be from someone you know so if a screen-saver appears to have been sent by a mate - be careful - it may be a virus. 6) be careful installing free software. Kazaa (file sharing software) is full of spyware.

i recommend people try option 2) out of curiosity - you might be surprised what you have on your pc

does anyone have any other tips to add to this list?

I would suggest something comparable to the cache cleaner provided by zone alarm pro is a necessasry addition to the above list..

Above all, DO NOT use the Administrator (or equivalent privileged) account for your day to day activities. Taking this simple step of always running under low privileges will thwart nearly all virus and trojan attempts to install and replicate.

Try using Linux for all your online banking and don't log in as root.

That's not going to do much good on a Linux PC or an Apple is it!

I've successfully used HijackThis & SpyBot in the past.

What's a "monitoring cookie"? A cookie is just a small text file created by your browser at the request of a website. It's nothing to do with viruses, worms or trojans.

You could just use a decent browser, such as FireFox from

The OP asked if there was anything else to consider when doing online banking. HitBox provides real-time Web site analysis to show you where site visitors come from, what content and products they look at, and which navigational paths they take through your site.
