No!
I wouldn't be money laundering. The reverse, if anything. I'd be turning a cheque into money for a friend.
As a legal basis for justifying keeping my (your) money on ice.
John:
I have followed this thread with interest. What if the situation is reversed? I.e. I wrote a cheque to company A (crossed a/c payee). But the cheque was paid into another company's account without my permission. Can I insist on it being paid into company A account? Can I demand the return of my money from company B?

No. You have not lost out. If there is a loser at all it is Company A and they would have a claim against the bank who collected the cheque for B. But it may be that A owed B some dosh in which case nobody has lost out.
As far as you are concerned it is all over, although you may be asked to produce the actual cheque for use in evidence in A's suit against the collectinbg bank.
Well, lad and I went to the bank and asked if we could pay it into my account. We both had ID. The cashier (is that what the still call them?), said no-way. "It wouldn't clear".
Thanks anyway.
Get his own account.. simpler in the long run.
I've just had a cheque off ondigital in my married name which I don't use anymore. Do you reckon its worth the effort taking it in to the bank and asking?

My ondigital cheque came too, for 86 p. I really feel that all the payments less than a pound (in bankruptcy cases) should be totted up and given to charity. There must be a massive cost involved in calculating, printing and posting all those cheques and explanatory notes, all that could be added to the charity as well.

I hope that you insisted that the bank transfer it, or their own money, back into yours.
If not, it's still not too late
