visa debit card with bad credit?

To cut a long story short, i got into a bit of a mess three years ago and had several ccjs. Since then I've had quite a change of fortune - all ccjs paid, no outstanding debts and I'm earning 80k a year but I still can't get anything more than a crappy visa electron card. I've tried for proper current accounts (and business accounts ) with all the high street and internet banks and been turned down.

I have a capital one basic credit card with a 350 limit which I was over paying into and using online, but the daily 1000+ transactions caught their eye and they've asked me to stop. They won't raise the limit because it was raised from 200 to 350 2 months ago.

all i need is a visa debit card to allow me to pay my american suppliers online. Prepaid doesn't appear to be a viable option for the UK. does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you applied for your credit record to be modified? You can have it amended so that your CCJ's are 'satisfied'. Get onto Equifax and Experian's websites and order your credit file, this should show you what's going wrong and what needs to be fixed, if possible.

I wonder if a nice letter to a local high-street bank might do you any good? Just saying that you need a current account, with no overdraft, and estimating how much you'll be crediting to the account each month.

Good luck. I was in a similar position to yourself, but with one satisfied CCJ. As soon as it disappeared off my file (6 years I think), lenders were scrapping to lend me money.

American Express have something called a Travellers Cheque Card which is basically a prepaid Amex card.
