If the accountant had the same version as you (QB Pro 05) or the Accountants version (I believe also works this way) then they should be able to read your data, make corrections, return the corrected data to you, and you should be able to open it and see the changes (if you knew where to look).

One problem though, is that any entries you make in QB while they have the file will be lost when you reinstall the data from the accountant.

You'll find very strong opinions on both sides of this question. A majority of clients and a minority of accountants agree with you.

A majority of accountants will disagree for the following reasons:

- I have clients using 8 versions of QB. To do as you wish I would need to maintain all 8 versions. Some accountants also support other programs such as Simply and MYOB, so this is not a trivial issue.

- In addition to just maintaining the software, the accountant needs to know the functional differences between versions.

- Newer versions have new features that can make our work easier.

- The client cannot enter transactions while waiting for the accountant to return the file. (The Accountant's Copy feature is designed to alleviate this problem.)

- Most accountants do not want to carry responsibility for data integrity and possession of the file. (Again, the Accountant's Copy reduces this responsibility.

Did he actually say he COULD not return an edited file, or WOULD not? If he actually COULD not, it would be because he had a newer version, not an older version. It seems more likely that this was his policy for one or more of the above reasons.

Of course it would be a given to rename the file before even handing the file to the accountant in the first place and yah, I understand what you mean Paul. Thanks pal.
