H & R Tax Cut

I do not know how many of you might do your own tax returns, but since my income is so low, I find it beneficial.

I was in a dollar store "DOLLAR TREE" this morning and saw a display offering the 'H & R BLOCK TAX CUT" , for $1.00. . (that's right, a buck) and although I used TurboTax for the past few years, I could not pass it up. I got it and installed it.

It updated itself completely, and even accessed last years Turbo Tax information. I could hardly believe it. SO, if you happen to have a Dollar Tree store in your area, you might want to look into this.

You can download the Tax Cut Basic Edition for free. Let me see if I can scare up the link...

This does not include state or federal e-file.

Another popular free tax preparation program is TaxAct. You can prepare your taxes online or download the software. TaxAct includes a free federal e-file.

Last year, I used both TaxAct and Tax Cut, just to make sure they gave me the same answers. When I was satisfied, I e-filed using TaxAct.

Thanks for the tip. I've been using TurboTax for many years for my federal taxes and do the state tax by hand. I bought Tax Cut this year just to try it. I think I paid $20 for it for the cheapest Federal and State version; I haven't broken the seal on the box yet, so I could still return it.

Best regards, Bob

To save $20, I'll do my state forms by hand, like I always have. :-)

Tax Act will allow you to compute your state taxes for free. But you have to pay $10 or $20 to print them or e-file.

I've used TaxCut for the last ~10 years. This year, I noticed both H&R Block and Intuit had significant price increases for the software. While the TaxCut package with both Federal & State still sells for $29, it no longer includes the free federal e-filing (extra $15). I may try TaxAct next year.

TaxCut Premium Federal + State includes forms for 1 state. The best deal I've found is at Office Depot for $25, less $10 Office Depot cash card. You also can get a free ream of paper after rebate (~$3.00) and free Symantec AV after rebate. I passed on the latter.

It does not include efiling, which costs $15 per return.

TaxCut at Staples was $29 and included a $10 Staples cash card [they mail it to you]. It also included a $40 rebate for MS Money 2007 Deluxe. This was for TaxCut Fed + State [no e-file]. Essentially, you get Money for free and the software for $19.
