Adding existing item to Matrix in 2.0

We set up UPC codes as our matrix master - in the wine business, different vintages of the same wine usually share a UPC code. So 2001, 2002, 2003 chardonnay use the same bar code. That is our matrix master; We set sub description 1 to Vintage, then set up matricies on vintage. So when an item is scanned, we get prompted for vintage. This works very well.

A month or so ago we upgraded to 2.0, and existing matrices seemed to convert fine. But if I want to add an existing item to an existing matrix, it doesn't seem to work.

Say my matrix master has a dimension 1 of Vintage, with 2000, 2001, and

2003. I add the new year (2003) to this. Now, I want to add an existing item to this matrix. I choose Add Item (that has 2003 in the Sub Description 1) - It gets added to the 'component items' list, but the Dimension 1 column is blank, with no way to edit it. It seems that the ONLY way I can figure to add a new component is via the 'Create Components' button.

What am I doing wrong? This really has us stuck.

We had no problem with this in 1.3

We just ran into the exact same scenario.

From what I can tell, adding an existing standard item into a matrix is just not possible.

It seems 2.0 almost forces you to make a decision on what type of item you wish to create. Something with many "dimensions" must be created as a Matrix item. You can't take a standard item and make it part of a matrix. At least not any more.

You can add existing items but the Matrix properites box freaks out because no "components" have been created. Apparently "components" are synonymous with "existing items".

I just don't understand why they would take away this backwards functionality. I can understand the direction that they're going in and how creating items from the 2.0 upgrade on would be a more efficient use of time but if you were use to creating standard items and then creating a matrix out of those in the past, it seems you must retrain yourself on the item creation process entirely.

What if you have some items that are deemed "standard" initially but 3 months later decide that you want/need to create a matrix for said items? Are you forced to take those items, mark them as inactive, and then recreate them as a matrix item? That doesn't make any sense.

the dimension 1 field should be a dropdown containing all dimension 1 options to choose from.
