Barcodes

We installed RMS at our small, retail store three years ago. The staff, being mostly non-technical and averse to change, rejected use of barcodes. Now that they've become comfortable with the system, I would like to move them to barcodes.

Does the system allow for using both a barcode and item lookup code for the same item? Can some items be bardcoded while others are not?

Stitcher,

You can use barcodes and itemlookup codes for the same item. You would add the barcodes for any item you want to use them for as an alias in the Item Properties - Alias tab.

Assuming most of your items have barcodes, the only problem with some items being in the system and others not would be distinguishing which items to scan. You probably don't want to make extra work, first trying to scan an item, then putting down the scanner and keying it. We have a lot of items that do not / cannot have barcodes so we use both methods, but we try to make it so that any item that has a barcode does scan.

Marc,

Thanks for your help! Sounds like using both will work.

We're in a niche, cottage industry where only about 1/20th of our product comes in barcoded...I know, I know, in this day and age that's hard to believe. So, we'll have to generate a lot of labels ourselves, which is another reason I haven't pushed harder for barcoding. Taking the baby step of scanning the products that are barcoded might convince the staff that it's helpful and gain their buy-in to barcode more merchandise.
