Cannot upgrade to RMS SP2 because of transactions on hold?

I installed RMS sp2 on a couple computers with no problem. At another location, however, I'm having some problems. I installed the pack. Can't open the POS or manager applications until I update the database to the latest version. Within Administrator I try to upgrade the database, however, am stopped with an error that the upgrade cannot continue until all transactions are settled. Can't remember the exact phrase. So there I am stuck, not being able to upgrade the database and not able to get back to manager or POS functionality (requires database v2.0x.x.). I re-installed the software from the disks and that restored previous functionality. Sure enough (maybe?) I found a transaction that was on hold (pause button at top). I cleared that and performed a Z again. We aren't currently using CC processing so I can't settle the batch. I tried the sp2 update, but was met with the same error / lock-out from being able to do anything.
