Upgrade Questions - QS2000 to RMS 1.3

Hello and thank you in advance for your input.

I am finally performing an upgrade to RMS 1.3 from QS2000 (v3.x??) after running the application for the last eight years. My current environment is a 3 lane QS implementation running on a Windows 2000 AD network. The database is running from a shared file server.

I have purchased all new POS equipment and computers to implement during the hardware. All attachments are USB.

My questions are as follows:

(1) I would like to perform the upgrade, while leaving the current system intact. Since it has ben eight years, I would like to provide the new RMS as a "test" system until all employees can be re-trained. Then I was figuring I would just perform the upgrade again when ready to go production. Has anyone completed this sort of upgrade and is it possible to have QS2000 and RMS running at the same time on the same server (not register equipment)?

(2) Are there any upgrade documentation in existance for upgrading from QS2000 to RMS 1.3. (The included manual was very light).

(3) My current database is 40 MB. Should I just stay with MSDE or go full blown SQL?

(4) And lastly, are there any recomendations for an add-in that will allow my Retail Fitness Suuplements and equipment RMS directly attach and populate an ecommerce site with little input on the webside?

Thanks again for all of the assistance! Ryan

Here are some suggestions -

  1. For a test system install & upgrade to RMS on an independant Windows XP computer. Practice on the same till you & your cashiers are confident on the new system. Once the training is over delete all practice sales transactions and switch to RMS on all registers.

  1. You may want to take the help of a RMS partner to perform the upgrade. As there are many things that you may want to check during and after the upgrade.

  2. RMS 1.3 will not work on Windows 2000. So you will have to upgrade to Windows XP operating system. Check the size of the database after the upgrade. MSDE has a database size limit of 2 GB so you should be ok.

  1. For an e-commerce RMS integration there are many options. Do you have an e-commerce website already ? If yes which shopping cart do you use ? Here are some options to consider with RMS - a. Nitrosell.com b. Newestech.com c. Retail Realm...

Mihir,

Thank you for the reply, you are correct, I will be upgrading the server to Windows 2003 SP1 and all new POS Registers will be XP SP2. But since the current DB is only a "MSACCESS" type of DB being shared out and the new one will be MSDE, they should technically co-exist on the same server. Is it only MSDE that gets loaded on the network server or are there other RMS services?

Also, on the point of a provider performing the upgrade, you are correct and being a specialist myself, I believe let the pros handle their particular expertise. But after convincing my friend to shell out over 10K on software and equipment upgrades, it will be difficult to part any more services fess form him.
