Converting work orders to layaways

Can it be done? Or do I have to re-enter the transaction?

I have a back-ordered item that has now arrived, and want to turn it into a layaway. And in the past, I've wanted to turn a back order into a work order because I can't apply partial deposits to back orders.

Malcolm,

The short answer is no, you cannot do it. You must cancel the backorder, return the deposit and the re-ring a layaway and apply the deposit again to it.

But I'm curious though, why do you want to do this?

In RMS, backorders, workorders and layaways are all "orders" and are handled basically the same. You take an order, you decide on a deposit amount and then you order it from the disty/manufacturer.

What is different in your mind about them? You can generate a report on each, filtered for items with on-hand quantities to contact the people when their "orders" are in stock and ready to be picked up with the stock RMS reports. If you want a combined 'orders' report, find one attached.

Copy it into your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Retail...\Store Operations\Reports folder and find it in Reports | Custom | Orders (Detailed) Report.

You must be using Outlook Express or some other type of newsgroup reader to see and download the file attachment. If you are not using a reader, follow the link below to setup Outlook Express. Click on "Open with newsreader" under the M$ Retail Management System on the right.

Thanks for replying, again, Jeff.

To answer the 'why' and 'what is different in my mind' questions - When I first started using RMS a few weeks ago, I incorrectly assumed that RMS would take partial deposits on Back Orders. It seems that it will only take 0 deposit or the full amount. Advice from this forum suggested that I use Work Orders instead, because they can take partial deposits. (I don't like this because RMS doesn't prompt my staff to create a Work Order - I liked the Back Order prompt).

So I wanted to convert my Back Orders to Work Orders. Can't do it. Have to recall, delete and re-enter.

Also, today, a Back Ordered item came in, and I wanted to review the Back Order, then thought I'd like to save it as a layaway just to see what happens. I could see this scenario actually happening - a customer's back ordered item arriving, then wanting to pay for something over a period of time while the item remains in my possesion. A back order to layaway conversion.

But I couldn't recall my Back Order, and then take a deposit. Or save it as a layaway.

Thanks for the report, by the way. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Malcolm

You can take a deposit, just hit "Shift F9" and overide deposit.

Dan,

You can't modify the deposit for a Back Order, its either all or nothing. Default is 0%, change to require 100% deposit in the POS Options tab in Configuration.

Are you saying you can take a Partial deposit, or OVERRIDE DEPOSIT on a BACK ORDER?

OUR INSTALLATION ONLY ALLOWS 100% or 0, NO OVERRIDES

DD,

I think Dan was talking about a layaway. You are correct, a backorder will only do 0 or 100%.
