Handheld device suggestions

I'm looking for a Windows CE handheld for carrying out stocktakes so it needs to have 802.11b/g and a barcode reader. Can anyone suggest a good value solution, please?

Thanks.

Thanks, Alex. This one has WLAN and the scanner built in as standard, doesn't it? With others like the Psion you have to add them on?

With the 2D scanner.

Micky,

If you are looking for a "good value", get yourself an inexpensive laptop with wireless and a USB port ($600+). Add a USB bar code reader ($125+), load RMS on it and you have a fully functionally system. Works great for tent sales too, if you have enough POS licenses. Don't want to carry it, put it on a rolling cart.

A next "best value" is one of the new UMPCs just coming out, has a 7" screen, little more expensive ($900+), but still cheaper than the MC50 ($1100+). These you can carry around, 2 pounds, 3 hours battery life. Here's a link to video about Samsung's version

released a couple of days ago. Remember you have an additional software cost ($500+) so the MC50 can talk to RMS. You already own RMS ($0) for the other two options.

You can use any bluetooth device with a Flic barcode scanner.

A second thought: but can you do a live stock count for a stocktake straight into RMS?

Hey Micky you need to be very specific when you say "live Count" is that live count whilst you are trading?

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for your message.

I meant out of trading hours but inputting the counts directly into RMS rather than via one of the third-party stocktaking modules.

Thanks again.

Micky,

Yes, no add-ons required with either option, you would be running RMS like normal, live.

Ivan,

What's this "trading" part? You mean trading for dollars, stamps, beer, 'roos, what? ;-)

By the way, Craig, what application do you run on the laptop when you carry out the stocktake?

Thanks.

Symbol is coming out with the MC35 next week, much more cost competitive than the MC50. WiFi, Bluetooth, VoIP, CDMA, Barcode reader, Windows Mobile 5 & partnered with the New West Tech company's RMS plug-ins.
