Having a spare till

Mar 17, 2007 6 Replies

Today i had a till error (or more a windows error!) whereby the registery on till 3 had corrupted, i was unable to fix this quickly, and on St. Patricks day it was hell being 1 till short.

My question is as follows!

I want to set up a complete unit for a spare - i understand my licene will only let me use my defined amount of tills at the same time, but i was thinking i could i set up a new till as a spare which can be linked to a training database for staff training ect then moved into the shop when one of our tills fails. ( i wouldnt need extra licences, just new hardware)

Can somebody tell me which configurations i will need to change when i swap one for the other? Or is that not nececary? Should i just set up this new till as a completely new till with new till number which will only run (because of licence constraint) when another till is closed? I can move it from the training database to the live database when it needs moved out onto the shop floor....

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

HI Phiilp, What I understand from below statement is that you have one register where you wanted to setup for training reason the training database and when you wana go on product just setup it that way if it is the case it is simple.

Whenever you want to setup the Training database go to Store Administrator and under configuration change the name of database, server and other information when you are live you can do the similar case.

What I have done is tell you I know RMS saved the information in registery so I have taken the backup of both registery training and live so instead of going again back and ford for the administrator program I just click on my exported registery and it just update my settings.

Is that what you want let me know so I can sent you the detail steps.

Thanks Akber,

Basically - i want to set up another till mainly for training, then if i need to move it out to the shop in event of one till going down, i will change it over to the live database. This would be very rare, so i dont mind having to change the settings manually, it only takes a minute to do... my quesiton really is... are any other complications in doing this?

HI Philip, there is no complication infact no licensing too, as you in both case using 2 different databases, so don't hasistate and goahead, best of luck need any help let me know anytime.

This works fine with 1.3 - I would like to know how you could do the same with 2.0. I think it will be a lot more complicated ( and maybe impossible? ) Tad

Actually, that depends on your RMS version.

In 1.3, this would be any easy swap out, expect that your training database would expire every three months or so and your training register would be in Evaluation Mode all the time.

With 2.0, there is no dongle and each register needs to be activated separately. You can call tech support to have your backup register activated in the event of a hardware failure, but you will either need to do this at the time you are swapping, or buy an additional license to have the spare ready to go.

This has been discussed quite a bit recently - check back in the newsgroup for more details.

You may have more configuration to do depending on your configuration. The Registry merge Akber mentioned can make this easier, but will not always catch everything. You should get your reseller to assist with this as there are quite a few variables that can be unique to your installation.

Glenn Adams Tiber Creek C> excellent news - thanks for your help on this Akber! :)
