Limited fonts on label printer

I can't go below font size 8 (smaller fonts are not offered in the label designer) or above size 12 (the fonts just don't print). I am using a Zebra TLP 2824 label printer.

Is this a limitation of the RMS software, or a limitation of the Zebra printer?

Thanks in advance, Steve

We use the text based EPL programming language with Zebra printers. You can generally get much finer control of the label format than you can with the Label Designer - the trade off is that you have to figure out the EPL language...

This is from a reply I made to a post in this thread titled "Re:Changing font size for label template" from 11/14/2005 - it's still on the server, but only for a few more days...

As you can see, it's possible to print as small as 6 point and as large as

  1. If you want to try the EPL language, you need to set the printer up as generic/text rather than using the Zebra Windows driver. You can use the Eltron.lbl file that ships with RMS as a strating point. Also, go back to that original post - it's a long thread, and there's probably some additional stuff that will help you.

If you want to stick with the label designer, the larger fonts are probably not printing because the text fields are too small to display the large font - make them taller and wider and see if your text starts printing...

GLenn,

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I'm happy to try my hand at the EPL language (I see Zebra has a downloadable programming manual).

Two more questions:

1)If I change the printer to generic/text, and create a beautiful EPL file, can I still request a label from within RMS (e.g. from the Label Wizard)? 2) Do I have access to all the fields in the Item table?

Thanks for your help, Steve

Yes, you still print from the item wizard, you just don't get to see a preview.

You have access to the same set of fields that are included in the Label Designer. Generally the fields are named the same as they are listed in the Label Designer drop down list, but it the designer shows spaces, you should remove them in your EPL Label. Take a look at Eltron.lbl in the ..\Labels directory to get started...
