POS2009 questions

I am using RMS right now and will be getting pos2009

In RMS we use alot of Macros, custom menu, touch screen, custom buttons, net display, new item wizard and reports are those all available in pos2009?

what features are not availabe in pos2009 that are in RMS. And what features are new?

is there a news group for ppos2009?

Do we upgrade from RMS or have to install a fresh copy and add the database itmes? or you can do both?

Is microsoft going to drop one of the programs?

Stick with RMS there are many things that you will regret losing with a move to POS2K9.

RMS has had its life extended for quite some time, Expect feature packs in the future.

One thing I like more in POS2K9 than RMS is the touchscreen but not worth losing all the other feature RMS has to offer that POS2K9 does not.

The upgrade from RMS to POS2K9 is very cumbersome from my experience(only done a few so havent had much experience)

Once youo go to the darkside of pos2K9 you cant come back to the brighter side of RMS.

Whats in POS2K9 that RMS doenst have.

Well at least theres implied improvements.

"OK heres a snippet of what you dont get from POS2K9 that you have in RMS"

Middleware support (PCCharge, IC Verify)

Revolving account, AR, Interest assessment and Billing

Microsoft Dynamics RMS users could set up charge accounts, assess interest, and issue periodic invoices against those accounts. Out of the box, POS users can extend credit to their customers and accept payments on customer accounts. Though this functionality is not available out-of-the-box in Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009,

Positive / negative check verification

In Microsoft Dynamics RMS, users could maintain lists of customer account numbers that were either authorized for check acceptance (positive verification) or restricted from acceptance (negative verification). In POS, this functionality has been replaced by electronic check authorization.

Gas pump deposits

Microsoft Dynamics RMS provided functionality for cashiers to accept prepaid gas pump deposits and then apply those deposits to subsequent gas sales. .

3rd party Accounting software integration

Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 supports QuickBooks integration. However, it will not support integration to other 3rd party accounting software such as PeachTree, MYOB and Blackbaud.

Accounting software from Microsoft

However, Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 will not support integration to Microsoft accounting packages like Small Business Financials and Microsoft Dynamics GP. However, Partners can build this integration through Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 SDK.

Price Bounds

Microsoft Dynamics RMS provided per-item upper and lower limits for prices. These prevented cashiers from over-discounting an item.

Buy Down Pricing

With buy-down pricing, a merchant can offer a reduced price for a limited quantity of items.

Sales Schedules

In Microsoft Dynamics RMS, users could set up a schedule so that items would automatically go on sale on certain days, at certain times, and so on.

Blocked Sales

Microsoft Dynamics RMS users could block the sale of an item for a specific period or according to a schedule.

Purchase limits

In Microsoft Dynamics RMS, customer purchases could be limited by units sold, total purchase amount, or a point system.

Shipping carriers and services

Microsoft Dynamics RMS included database tables for shipping carriers and their services. The appropriate service could be selected at the register. Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 does not support this functionality out of the box.

Calendar

Microsoft Dynamics RMS included an event calendar with reminders.

Cashier-to-cashier messaging

Microsoft Dynamics RMS included a simple in-store messaging tool.

Line display message preview

Microsoft Dynamics RMS included a line display preview in the message designer. In POS, line display messages are previewed on the actual hardware.

New Item Wizard

Microsoft Dynamics RMS provided a primitive wizard that walked the user through item creation. The most valuable use of this wizard-creating matrix items quickly-has been improved upon in the new matrix functionality in POS.

Crystal Reports

Microsoft Dynamics RMS included support for Crystal Reports. Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 does not support this functionality. Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 uses the SQL RDL instead using which partners can customize and extend reporting functionality.

User Defined Macros

Microsoft Dynamics RMS cashiers could record keystrokes to simplify common tasks. The task pads in POS can provide comparable one-touch access.

Internet Orders

Microsoft Dynamics RMS provided point-of-sale access to the merchant's Internet store. In particular, the Microsoft Dynamics RMS Customization Guide detailed add-ins for XML integration with Yahoo! Store. Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 does not support this functionality out of the box.

Support for Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000

Unlike Microsoft Dynamics RMS, Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 will not support Windows and SQL Server 2000. However, support will be extended to more recent platforms like SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008.

Net Display

A net display is a customer-facing monitor that is used to display HTML content. Though Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 will not ship this functionality out of the box, support for this functionality will be included in the SDK.

Field level security

Microsoft Dynamics RMS provided a complex feature for setting security on individual controls. In lieu of this, POS provides an easy-to-manage, task-based set of privileges.
