Recommended barcode strategy

I will be creating barcodes for various items, what is the recommended barcode symbology - Code 39. Also for item code are there any recommendations

- length of item code, alpha numeric or just numeric?

Code 128B It can handle Alpha Numeric characters as well as Upper and Lower case and some symbols.
