Restricting Zero Quantity Transaction Posting

RMS should not allow a cashier to zero a quantity (creating a zero sale) and tender the sale for zero dollars allowing the cash drawer to open. I know you can restrict changing quantities for items (which is not what I want and is not the solution I am suggesting). I want RMS to not allow a cashier to enter an item with zero quantity and zero total cost to hit "Tender" or "Enter" then enter "0" for the tender received and have the cash drawer open. This allows cashiers to ring up product, tell the customer what they owe, zero out the quantity (removing the record of the sale) and tender it out with zero dollars then give the customer back their change, then the cashier is able to take the money paid for the product and never have their drawer show short.

Also, I dont think the "require cashiers to give receipts" is a solution because 80% of customers dont even want them and get frustrated when you ask them to take one.

These are people problems; you can't expect computers to solve this for you. Even with these suggestions you made, cashiers will still find a way to work around them.

If you have problems with the cashiers stealing from the till, then do Z reports after every shift and you will see the discrepancy right away. If you're worried they're not entering the sales and just pocketing the cash, then get cameras and set a policy that they have to hand a printed receipt to every customer, even if the customer doesn't want it. Or hire new cashiers.

An "empty transaction" is one without any products, that is, no detail lines. Chris is asking about the case where the cashier changes the quantity sold to zero and then hits the F12 Tender and OK. A transaction with a zero quantiy line will post even if the "empty transaction" setting is turned off.

Hi Chris, yes we have found this case to be a problem as well.

We have a work-around that pops up a message window at tender time if the transaction contains any zero quantiy or zero price items AND the cashier does not have admin or manager rights. The message window can only be cleared by entering a password. The head cashier has a laminated key-ring tag with a barcode containing the password. So she just scans the barcode and the window is cleared. Of course she reviews the receipt to see why the cashier entered a zero quantity or zero price. Our report of Zeroes, Returns and Voids showed that the number of zero items went way down after instituting this safeguard.
