RMS - Scalability

Hi...

I'm an RMS newbie so forgive the question....

I have a client who is looking for a front/backoffice retail solution...

They have 2 Wholesale warehouses (4/5 tills each)... and about 25 retail shops (2 tills each)... HQ for the company is attached to one of the warehouses... all shops are linked by WAN... each shop has a back office server...

They have about 150000 product lines, and my question is... is RMS up to this scale of business?

We will engage an RMS partner at the appropriate point... but before we start I'd be very grateful if some of you experienced people can save me some time...

If it's not up to that scale... can anyone suggest a product that is?

Many thanks.

Mark.

RMS Store Ops with HQ will handle this just fine, no issues of scalability on software, just need the appropriate backend hardware to run SQL for that size of business.

Hi!

First question is, what software are they using now for their accounting purposes? And if they want RMS link into their existing system?

First product that comes to my mind is Navision. doing everything together in one system is a great benefit. It'll help to know the inventory, sales figures. Basically everything in one simple place. all servers and stores can still be connected.

Hi Mark,

Strictly from a hardware/software standpoint RMS could scale to you needs - in my opinion though it generally does not work well from a usability standpoint once you get up around 100K items.

The way it populates data grids and makes you hunt for items is great when you have 2000 - 25000 items but when you get huge numbers of items its more difficult and can strain the cash registers even if the db server is a monster.

Not saying it won't work great in your situation but I'd take more time to make sure it does.

RMS can manage the scale but to be suitable for a business you need to understand the RMS processes and compare it to your client needs. It would be advisable to consider the type of business your client is in ? RMS is good for certain businesses but may not work always. What are they selling ? How is the current business process ? What is the purchasing process ? How is accounting managed ? What kind of IT team does your client have?

You can contact us or any RMS partner to help you evaluate the suitability for your client.

I don't see any software issue here. This is definitely a hardware concern.

Positive Technology has an install with 250 locations, hanging off of one HQ. I'm not sure how many SKU's they are using, but I do know that we have customers that are at about 200K. The tricky part of this solution, is formulating the hardware requirements.

Of course, I'd be happy to help as a BP.
