Slow Receipt & Journal Generation

After closing a sale our computer takes 30 - 90 seconds to print the receipt. The journal viewer is also very slow. However when I edit the receipts in the Manager, the printer prints almost immediately. It only slows down for actual transactions in the POS program.

I am using OPOS instead of the windows driver and the healthcheck doesn't show any problem with the printer or the cash drawer. The printer is hooked up to COM1 through the cash drawer. The baud rate is set to 9600 and doesn't seem to work when I set it to 19200, or 38400.

I have also tried reinstalling the default receipt templates from the cd, but that hasn't had an impact on the receipt generation speed.

When we first installed RMS the receipts were much much faster. Does anyone have any advice to speed up our printer?

Well, it sounds like the delay may be with posting the transaction to the database rather than with printing the receipt.

Where is the database located? Are you saying you open Manager on the register to open the journal and test the printer? Have you tried the "Reprint" feature (Shift-F11), or printing from the Journal within POS? What are the results of those actions?

Colin-

I ran into a situation with RMS, OPOS and dumb cash drawers. If the cash drawer is capable of only one-way communication (ie, the printer sends a pop, and the cash drawer can't respond)then the slow receipt is a result of OPOS waiting for the return message from the drawer to time out. You can use the windows driver or buy new cash drawers.

I just fixed a client whose server/register took 30 seconds to print a receipt after the cash drawer opened. turned out a HP colorsmart printer was the default (not even on this computer) And as soon as I removed the HP from the printers folder, and made another generic printer as the default (because otherwise the label printer would be the default- and the journal doesn't like a Zebra as the default), the receipts printed immediately.

I had a customer like this; they had an HP LaserJet on another computer, and the POS station was mapped to it. I sat for an hour trying to figure out why the Epson receipt printer on LPT1 wouldn't work.

Eventually I discovered that If I removed the HP from the printers, the Epson would work. As soon as I re-mapped the HP, the Epson stopped working again. I suspect their drivers are locking the LPT port, even though the HP was connected via File and Printer Sharing.

I was having a similar problem on a development machine because a Network drive storing the logo did not exist. Receipts and the Journal would hang for 30-40 seconds before displaying or printing receipts. Different solution to a similar problem so I thought I should post.

I'm about to move everything, logos, reports and templates back to the local default locations. I think it will be easier to update the physical copies on the local machines. Previously I was changing the links in the XML code, the configuration locations in Administrator and the Receipt Formats in Manager. Not sure what I was thinking when I originally configured all this but I'm sure I wanted changed templates and logos in the one location. I guess relative paths would fix the logo problem.
