The other user will have to have the same version of QB *and* have it updated to the same patch you had.
If the other user's version is higher than yours she'll have to update the file to the new version but if its older than yours she won't be able to open it.

Yes. All she will need to do is a File>>Open and then navigate to that qbw file.
Yes. I never use the backup in QB anymore. I copy the qbw files to a flash drive and an Iomega USB hard drive.
is this true for the .qbw file AND the .qbb file produced by the file>>backup utility? i was hoping nthe .qbb file was a little more robust -- otherwise, what is the purpose of it..

Quickbooks Basic, Pro & Premier (don't know about Enterprise) have never been backwards compatible to my knowledge. Company files can only be read in the same version they were created or higher.

Win98 (for example) cannot read a diskette formatted with NTFS by WinXP. DOS
5 cannot read a disk formatted with FAT32 by Win98.From a software perspective, it's difficult enough to make stuff FORWARD compatible, let alone having ancient software process current data.
Agreed, backup files are useless, they lack robustity.
The only purpose of the back up file is just that--provide a backup. It is a compressed file so it will be smaller. Some find that their qbw file is too big to e-mail but they can e-mail their backup file.
Current versions of QB can produce a portable flle instead of a backup file for e-mail purposes. The portable file is tiny and need I say ROBUST.

From a Quickbooks perspective, can you define ROBUST for me. That term is not registering with me this morning.
Beats me. By the way just what is a Yankee Doodle Dandy?

In today's parlance, a "Metrosexual."
Excellent call.
