Custom NUMERIC fields in Quickbooks? No!?

As far as I can determine, I bought a product (Quickbooks Enterprise Edition 2005) that allows custom fields, but does not allow those custom fields to be numeric.

Is this true? Please tell me it isn't.

Thanks.

Custom fields may be populated with any information you choose.

As long as they are text. QB does not suport the other comon types found as you move up the software food chain, such as, Amount, Number, Interger, Yes/No, Date and Time.

You mean you can't even ENTER numbers as text fields?

You can enter any text you want, including numbers. But it will be treated as text, not as numbers. That means no decimal alignment, no mathematical calculations, none of the other database field properties that are associated with fields other than text.

What type of field, defined by a number on which arithmetic can be performed, to you want to add to your database?

I want to add several custom quantity fields, like LBS.IN, LBS.OUT, and NO.OF.FILETS.

Then I want totals for the fields, like so:

ITEM DESCRIPTION LBS.IN RATE LBS.OUT NO.OF.FILETS AMOUNT

ITEM A DESCRIPTION 1 10 5.25 8 12 52.5 ITEM B DESCRIPTION 1 12 4.25 9.5 12 51 ITEM C DESCRIPTION 1 5 2.25 1.2 12 11.25

27 18.7 36 114.75

The custom fields are not additional variables for you to perform calculations on. they are there more for informational purposes. Typical uses are phone numbers, birthdays, and the like. You are looking to convert QB into an inventory management system for which is was never intended to be.

It just seems like a very basic accounting feature.

Total items sold; total cost.

But yes, there are certainly not numeric.

The contents of the fields are certainly numeric. QB does not provide the capability to report on these fields. They are intended as informational fields only.
