HELP! My backup won't restore

2004 Premier edition.

Old computer bit it, so I'm using a new one; similar specs; P4 2.8 512ram DELL POS and I have installed my quickbooks software on it.

Figured I could just restore, so before I even created a company on start-up, I tried to use the File >> Restore option.

I have the backup on a hard drive that I connected through a USB2 box and had no probelm searching for and finding the backup in the folder I put it. The lower part of the dialog box asked for location and name to restore to, so I figured I could just name it and it would work; no dice.

So, I went through the process of creating a new company, just the basics, name phone, email, done. Went back to the restore option and used the company that I had just created as my location (the directory it was in) and name for the restore; it asks me if I want to overwrite the existing company; I choose yes (doesn't even take a split second and I'm back to the same user interface, like nothing happened). Nothing. none if my costomers or records, just an open empty company.

Any thoughts? I'm losing my mInD!

Two things: (1) delete the company you just set up, so that you have no companies on your new system, then (2) copy the backup file from your USB hard drive to the primary hard drive on your new system (your Desktop or other convenient location) then restore from there. Good luck.

"Restore" is a Windows-word for replacing data with a Windows backup. QB may use the word too, but you may need to be more specific. What process did you use to create the file you are trying to "restore?" Is the file at issue a Windows backup, a QB backup, or simply the QB data file (or something else)?

What program created the "backup" you have on a hard drive? What program is running that shows you the "dialog box?" Winows Backup/Restore, QB, File Manager, what? And what does "no dice" mean? The program had to do something (some message, re-boot, BSOD, something). What did it do?

The reason for this inquiry is that the Windows Restore program has no inkling of what to do with a QB backup file or vice-versa. Let's make sure the program you're trying to use is compatible with the source data.

ok, thasnks for the help here. I'll let you know before we begin that I'm back up and and running. I took the hard drive that contained the OS from the last system and coppied the 'Intuit' folder (C:/Program Files/) over to the new machine (replacing the one I created when I installed QB) and all is good. I am still a little concerned about the integrity of the backup system that I had in place, so I would like to continue persuing this problem.

The intial backup was created through QBs back-up option that is built into the software. Since I have 2 hard drives running, I point the QB software to the spare disk that doesn't contain my OS and it overwrite the backup with a new one about every 3 times I close the program (or when I tell it to).

I'm thinking now that I should just copy the Intuit folder every so often, as this seemed to work for me. Any thought or concerns on doing this?

Essentially, it was a QB backup that was recognised and should have worked through the QB restore option found in the file menu in QBs software. Could it really be that it needs to be on the same HD as the OS? I never tried moving it, as I got it up and running before I had to try that.

Thanks again for the help folks.

PS> 'no dice' just means that what I was doing was unsucessful.
