Hi my small office needs a network server (the wireless is taking 45 minutes to save at this point - it's not going to work anymore). There are five computers that will be using quickbooks. Can anybody recommend some good resources for getting started? Also looking for hardware recommendations - nothing extravagant just simple and reliable, mirrored preferrably with automatic backups.

Your best bet is to ask others in your area for the name of a reliable network consultant/reseller.
Not an option.
Why? If you are asking for opinions on hardware, you will also need help with server configuration, etc. A local consultant is worth his/her weight in gold if they are good, IMHO.

To improve performance:
Since you're going to direct-connect anyway, put in the wiring first. That alone may solve your performance problems.
QB 2006 would be my next step.
I went with Dell. About three years ago I purchased their 1600SC server, and installed Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. This system has been solid and reliable for our 4-6 person organization. One piece of advice...setting up a server is not a project for amateurs. Unless you are willing to put in a lot of time, and absorb a vast learning curve, have someone do it for you. The good news is that once set up, the network will take very little outside maintenance for a small organization. Good luck!
