one time tax table download problem

If I recall correctly -- if prior to downloading the one-time update, you set the Update QuickBooks option to "Shared Download", then the payroll update is stored in the Download location, usually named something like: "C:\YourFolder\DownloadQB16\" And you can update other computers from the data in that folder.

According to the QB Help on "Shared Download":

"When the Share Download option is enabled, QuickBooks downloads updates to the location in which the shared company data file resides. Otherwise, QuickBooks downloads updates to a location relative to the directory or folder where your copy of QuickBooks is installed."

Try this. Run a search or look for a sub-folder in your QB Program Files folder named "DownloadQB16" (it's "16" because that's the file version of QB 2006) on your old computer with the one-time update. If you find it, copy the folder and contents to your new computer - don't put it in the QB Program Files folder. Now set QB on your new computer to use Shared Downloads (Select "Update QuickBooks" from the Help menu and click on the Options tab page), and set the download location to the DownloadQB16 folder. Now try updating.

Every year I buy the latest version of QBPro for the one-time tax table for payroll processing. For me, this is cheaper than payroll subscriptions, and it suits my needs. I'm a very small outfit with only four employees and do payroll in-house myself.. Been doing it for 35 years. The stuff about needing to have the up-to-the-minute current tax tables is hogwash. I can only recall maybe one time over the years that a new second yearly tax table guide was sent out for tax rate changes. This is not to say that tax rates don't change over the course of the year, but the importance is minor. The biggest changes in taxes in a person's paycheck comes from the number of exemptions or allowances that they claim. There might be a maximum number of exemptions they can claim, but I don't think there is a minimun, and changing from 2 to 1, or 1 to 0, etc., can effect the taxes withheld from a paycheck to a much greater amount than the minor differences between tax tables when tax rates change. The ultimate tax liability at the end of the year for a person depends on their tax return, and the taxes withheld only determines if they need to pay or if they get a refund. Intuit's crap about trying to protect the customer from doing great harm in using the one-time table for the course of the year is only pressure to push you into their payroll services machine. I'm pissed and ranting because I purchased the newest version of QBPro this year as always and downloaded my one-time tax table for my meager payroll processing, and after moving my business to a new computer (after 7 years, things were getting sluggish, especially with the new version of QB, but thats a different story), I find that there is no way to get my one-time tax table from my old computer to the new. I called Intuit, and the line was "it's called a one-time tax table because you can only download it one-time." Well yeah, but I'm not asking for a newer version of the tax table, only to move it from my old CPU to my new. I don't have a multi-user operation, and only one copy of QB. I'm the sole person here doing the bookkeeping. I tried portable file transfer, backup and restore, even copying the QB folder and moving that, but that only screwed things up big-time. If anyone knows how to transfer the tax table, or any date changing tricks that will allow me to process paychecks, even with last years tax table without screwing up my books, please post. I know in the past, maybe years ago, I had to rebuild my system and had to call Intuit to allow another one-time download (same tax version), and it was possible for them to open up for another download. Now they say no. This sucks!

From QB help, "For QuickBooks to calculate your payroll taxes and provide payroll tax forms, you must sign up for QuickBooks Payroll and connect to the payroll service to get payroll updates."

Sure seems like payroll is a subscripti>>

Steve, did you try going through the sign-up for standard payroll omitting your credit card info? That was how it always worked before.

I tried that. It kept bringing you back to the same screen and wouldn't let you get any further without a credit card number.

To get the one-time tax table (and it is the same with QBPro 2006), you need to go to the payroll services setup. I don't want to mislead you in how to navigate to the payroll service setup because it may be different on my machine now as I have already done the service setup. It may be accessible thru Employees-Payroll Service Activities-Modify Payroll Service Options, or maybe thru Help-Update QB. Just navigate until you get to the payroll service application site. Choose the Standard Payroll service and apply, entering all information except your credit card info. When you submit the info, it may ask you to please enter the missing credit card info. Don't enter the CC info. When you submit again, it should come back with a message about the one-time tax table. Just proceed and you will get the tax table which will allow you to process your payroll using this one-and-only

2006 tax table until Feb 15, 2007. If you have a backup computer or laptop on which you have also installed your same copy of QB, I suggest that you try to get the one-time download for that one at the same time. Not sure if it will work, but it has for me in the past with older versions.

My situation is a bit different. I have my main computer and I have my older computer that I use as a backup for the sole purpose of being able to continue with my business operation should the main computer fail. I have a copy of the same retail box QB on each as I believe is allowed by Intuit. I would have two seperate data files (same company), one on each computer that I could restore with my daily backups to be current. I would need the tax table on each to be able to continue processing payroll. Since this not a multi-user environment using one data filed stored on one computer, I don't believe the shared download would work.

Thanks, that worked. I didn't notice before but when the CC window comes up again all it demands is company info, not CC info. After entering that it let me proceed to the d/l.

Ya think that would be a selling point and an incentive to upgrade more frequently. I always wait till I get "Sunsetted."

You have 24 hrs to do the "one time" download on both machines. If you didn't, you're screwed. The only other method would be to "ghost/image" your present hard drive, reformat you old machine and put the image on it. If you are not familiar with this method, take the both machines to a local computer service store and have them do it for you. FWIW it could probably cost you as much as the Payroll subscription.
