QB 2006 Pro Free Tax Table download - Multiple computers

According to the Quickbooks PRO 2006 FAQ, it is acceptable to install the single user version on up to 20 machines, as long as only copy is used at a time.

My question has to do with the one time free tax table download. If the quickbooks is installed on 2 or 3 machines, is it possible for them to all get the free download?

I seem to recall this question from years ago, but I can't find the record of it. I thought someone said that it was possible to do multiple downloads using the one license during a specific time window, like 24 hours, although my memory of this is not vivid and I may be confusing Quickbooks with some other product.

Just make sure shared down load is selected when setting up QB update on each workstation and specify the same folder location. Each workstation will be updated and only a single download is required.

Your memory is correct. At least for QB2003, the one free tax table download opportunity was kept active for 48 hours after your first download. During that time, you could download it to any computer where you installed QB2003. After the 48-hour window, no more tax table downloads without a subscription. So, if you bought a new computer and installed QB2003 on that computer (after the 48-hour window), you could no longer get the one free tax table download.

I don't know how it works in QB2006.

Thanks for the very usefull info. That sounds good to me.

Based on your post and what I could read on-line about shared download, I get the impression that the updates are stored in a file on one machine on the customers network, and that each copy of Quickbooks has to request the update from that machine. To make sure that all machines are able to get the update (eg. A laptop might be out of the office for a few weeks), I assume that the update files are not deleted, unless they are actually superceded. Would that mean that if a person got a new computer, or had to do a re-install of Quickbooks from the CD a few months after the shared download took place that the new install could be updated from the local update file? That would be a great bonus feature of shared download, if it was possible.

Yes, the whole idea of the shared download is that only one workstation needs to be connected to the internet and all workstations are always patched to the same rev. If an update is present in the shared location (a folder) then it is automatically installed on any workstation that is set up to share updates and points to the location.

Does that mean one copy on one file? Suppose you have a whole bunch of company files? And, just out of curiosity, what happens of you have the single user version, and two people try to log into the same file?

Although that works with updates, I don't think that works with the one free tax table download. The one free tax table download isn't a file that can be downloaded and saved in a folder (true for QB2003 but I don't know how it works with QB2006).

That may be true for updates, but you originally asked about the one free tax table download. If the one free tax table download for QB2006 works the same as it did for QB2003, it's not a file that you can download and use later.

Just because the tax update can't be manually down loaded does not mean the tax update files can't be configured to be stored in a common shared folder.
