Yes, you can open a copy of their file.

I also chatted online with Intuit tech support and the rep said it could be done, but I don't take chat support as the last word on any subject.
That's OK. We weren't planning on sending the file back to the client. We just wanted to be able to export some account transactions to Excel, drill down on any transactions where we deemed it necessary, print out a trial balance, etc.
I didn't think we would have the ability to print any reports specific to the manufacturing edition, but I did want to know if we could at least open the file and not have a mess even if we could open it.
It's nice to have confirmation that this is doable from people in the trenches.

If there is a report that is specific to the MFRS version have them memorize the report before you upgrade the file.
