Problems using Brother 1440 Printer with Quick Books

Hi I am looking for some assistance.

I have a problem using this printer(driver?) with QB 2003 Pro. When printing statements/invoice, etc., the spooler error message: ' SPOOL32 caused an invalid page fault in module unknown' appears. I reinstalled windows(98SE) after an FDisk and the problem was latent for a while, then returned. Windows prints fine for all else outside of QB.

I also have an HP Laser that just does not have the issues. The brother has been on the system for a couple of years and did the job well...and better than the HP....up until recently.

Has anyone had these kinds of printer issues?

I have done most of what is normally done--RAW/EMF, etc. Even had discussions($) with Microsoft TS to no avail.

I found some info on the QB support site, but none helped.

Any assistance will/would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Joe

HeyBub

Have you had discussions $ with Brother TS?

If reinstalling windows worked before, try it again. If it goes away again, then I've got some suspicions. Make damn sure you are virus and spyware free - don't just use one program to scan either, not every one catches everything and make sure you have the latest updates for them too. Second suspicion, you have two programs on that computer that can't live with each other. Keep detailed logs of your activities and you may see a pattern of what you do and when the problem starts. Without seeing your place the third suspicion is environment, replace your surge suppressers, buy a UPS and put down a grounded anti-static chair mat.

I don't think you have a hardware failure, but that is always a remote possibility. If you have hardware test programs, run them over a weekend and make sure they are doing read/write on the hard drive as many default to read only. A new printer cable is cheap, but I don't think that is the problem or you would have other problems.

I do have a suggestion. If this is a software problem, and I suspect it is, unless you have some special need for 98SE, an upgrade to XP should make this go away and never return. I make this suggestion because the cost of debugging this most likely exceeds the cost of buying a new machine and printer.

Thanks for the follow up. Wish it were that easy--the new driver was one of the first things I did. Even talked with Brother TS--they told me if the newest driver did not do the deed, then it is not their problem but Microsoft.

Funny thing is that it works as it should excepting with QB....

Not about to do that without something to go on. If it goes away

Make damn sure you are virus and

latest in Anti Virus, Spybot and Adaware. Even did the housecall.antivirus.com deal...

Second suspicion, you have two programs on that computer that can't

This one has a lot of merit, IMHO. Will work with it! Keep detailed logs of your activities and you may

UPS is new...and the environment does not affect the HP...interesting.

If you have hardware test programs, run them over a weekend

I concur. Will evaluate move to XP although 98 sure has done and does the jobs well...excepting one.....

I appreciate the help. Joe

The 1440 normally works fine, I have one and no issues. I would guess something is fouled up either in the registry or some system file the Brother uses is smashed. Reload 98 / should be fine at that point.

I'm not sure if Windows98SE is the culprit or not, but you should really consider the upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Windows 98SE is ~7 years old. It has memory leaks. It'll never be considered truly 'secure' as far as operating systems go. I have severe reservations against hooking up a Win98 machine to a broadband connection. I don't even think MS is doing new security updates for it anymore. If they still have extended support for windows98se, it's got to be going away soon, if it hasn't already. Just thinking about running 98 again, makes me twitch a little. Windows 2000 and XP have spoiled me over the last few years. ...they are soooo much more stable & soooo much more secure. Network performance is also a lot better. If you decide to upgrade, I'd recommend a clean install versus upgrading on top of windows98.

If you want to stay in windows98,... well,...

Having IPFs in "module " always weirds me out a bit. First thing that I suspect is a virus of some sort. Are there any additional details on the error message or is that it?

I would run a full (as in every file on the hard drive) anti-virus scan with whatever AntiVirus software you have. Make sure your virus definitions are up to date.

Then I'd download, install, update and then scan your entire hard drive with this program: Adaware SE Personal edition 1.06:

After that finishes, I'd run an online anti-virus scan at the following website:

Then I'd spend a little bit of time trouble shooting the issue ...before formatting the drive and reinstalling 98se from scratch, followed by installing a firewall and antivirus software program prior to getting connected to the internet, and then running all of the windowsupdates, concurrently with updating the antivirus definitions. If possible, I'd download all the major windowsupdate standalone updates first to keep myself off the internet for as long as possible. :)

Nothing fixes problems like a good format and reinstall. *cackle*

It the driver works in a fresh copy of windows98 the only thing I can think of is that there must be a conflict of some sort between software programs, or that "something" has gotten corrupted. If the HP prints fine than I'm inclined to think that something is conflicting with the brother driver and that it's not a Windows printer subsystem issue.

Another good question to ask here is: what processes are running on your machine? I'm not talking about what's just in the task list, I'm talking about hidden processes as well. I'd do a search for process viewer software programs that run on windows98 and give one of them a spin to get a complete list of what's running. Then, ...I'd google each and every unknown process. Kill those processes that you don't need. Test it. Rinse, repeat.

Hope some of this helps.
