QB Pro 2006 Slow Responce

2 issues noted of very slow response. When I go to Receive Payments screen and choose a customer and then hit my tab key to go to the next field it takes about 5 seconds to finally go to the amount field. After I create an invoice, I click on the Previous tab and it also takes about 5 seconds. Everything else performs flawless with no delays. It's only these 2 functions that are causing me grief. I am using a P4 3 Gig and defrag weekly. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Try this:

- Go to the lists menu, and one by one resort all of your lists.

- When those are all done, go to the centers and resort all the center specific lists (customers, vendors, and employees).

- When that's done ... pretend you're writing a check, in the pay to the order of field, hit the drop down arrow, and when a list drops down, do a "CTRL - L" - it should open a new list, go ahead and resort that list as well.

- Close out of QuickBooks.

- Open up QuickBooks.

- Try it again

...does it work faster now?

It sounds like you might have list damage of some sort on the customer list, but resorting all of them won't hurt anything. Other than list damage you might have actual data damage - if resorting the lists doesn't fix it, do a verify and potentially a rebuild of the data file (only if it says you have damage). That might do the trick as well.

Why not simply do a rebuild instead resorting the lists which is probably just a shooting from the hip response to the problem that will have no effect. A rebuild will reindex the file.

Actually, a rebuild won't fix list damage. Resorting the lists is the only way to really fix list damage. Rebuilding a data file verifies and potentially re-indexes transactions and such in that file, but lists aren't the same as transactions in the data file..

You might need to resort your lists if:

  1. Things are taking too long to pull up or select - if you have undue delays when trying to select a name, item or account.
  2. If your lists elements are out of alphabetical order (even when you are sorting by name).

Both can be good indicators of list damage.

Do you speak of lists from anecdotal evidence, from other programs that use lists, or from actually knowing the QB code? I'm not challenging what you are saying, this is just the first time I recall seeing anyone discussing lists as being symptomatic of slow response in QB.

Especially with regards to version 2006 which uses a completely new database.
