Question about Slow Operation

I recently switched back to Quicken and updated a quicken file with many years of data (filesize is about 24Mb). I started with Quicken Premier 08 but recently upgraded to Premier 09. In both versions I noted that most operations were very slow but today I timed it and believe something must be wrong with my setup or I would be seeing a lot more complaints.

If I click on a different account in the left pane accounts list to open up the register for the account, it takes about 15 seconds before I can do anything else (egg timer spinning).

If I then accept a downloaded transaction, that takes about 40 seconds before I can do anything else. And if I enter a new transaction or change anything in an existing transaction it takes about 60 seconds. Usually during the latter half of this wait, the screen starts flickering one or two times per second.

The computer I am running the program on is a Dell Lattitude D820 with Intel Core 2 T5600 @1.83Ghz, 1Gb RAM running Win XP Professional.

I realize the ram is low but I don't notice any slowness with any other programs, including MS Money with an equivalently sized data file. Also, I've tried it on a desktop with more ram and it is also slow, although I haven't timed it

Has anyone experienced anything like this with the program? Are there any things I can try to speed it up. Is the flicker just something that you have to live with or is there something that can be done?

Thanks.

Hi, Jeff.

Yes, those times are quite slow. Quicken 09 Deluxe performs much faster for me, just about as fast as it has for all the years that I've been using Quicken, starting in 1990. My data file is about as large as yours. I've been using Vista for over 3 years (including time when I was beta-testing Vista), until a few weeks ago when I started testing the pre-beta version of Windows 7. Before Vista, I ran WinXP Pro. More RAM should certainly help you, but with WinXP, 1 GB should be enough. With Vista, I've had 2 GB, then

4 GB, and now back to 3 GB because one DIMM failed.

What kind of anti-virus/anti-malware software are you running? Is it set to scan Quicken transactions? I haven't had this problem, but I've often seen it mentioned as a cause of slow computer execution. My experience on this is very limited but other users here should be able to help if they know what you are using - and how you are using it.

Have you tried having Quicken create a copy of your data file, and then use the copy? Perhaps some non-fatal corruption in the file is slowing things down. You could Validate the copy to see if that speeds things up.

I'm about out of ideas. Let's hear what others might suggest.
