QB Premier 2006-7 (Aus) Inventory Management

Hi Everyone,



We've been using QB for about 5 years and have grown to a size where inventory management has become a critical requirement.



I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel - but from what I can see QB is unable to track individual serial numbers in any sensible way. Yes, I can hack on it and add a field, but as it's not intended functionality, tracking becomes difficult.



I've googled extensively and found a number of after-market products - but most are expensive and likely don't even work with the Australian version.



Before I go making rash decisions like changing to Peachtree or Line



100 or something, can anyone advise of a good product that works with Aussie QB or alternatively even a decent low-end stand-alone product?

Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and go to PT?



I haven't looked - but doesn't MYOB support serial numbers?

Just hang on until QuickBooks 2008-09 is released on the SQL database. You may find that the add-ons used in the US are available to you. The release is in April, and it is currently in the final stages of development/testing. The details of what can be used with the new version have not yet been released, but I am sure you will hear of this soon.

Perhaps you have also outgrown an entry level accounting program like QB. Reinventing the wheel is not the case here, perthaps moving up the software food chain best describes your situation.

A general-purpose accounting system is often not appropriate for inventory control because almost every industry has quirks about how it handles inventory. I saw a system in use at a nursery - not only did they have a humongous field for the plant's Latin name, they had a code to enter when the plant DIED.

Look around your industry. You may very well find an inventory system tailor made to handle the eccentricities required (such as electronic ordering, external reference tools, mail order sales, etc.).

Jason, I am working on getting us running on AllOrders by Numbercruncher. I am not running it yet, because my boss made such a freaking mess of QuickBooks that I have spent almost five weeks just doing cleanup work.

When I was searching for Bill of Materials program I called some of Numbercrunchers references. The funny thing was that the first one blew them out of the water! However the second one was a guy clearly familiar with using AllOrders, and he was absolutely thrilled with the way it handled serialized parts. His business was selling telephone systems and they tracked ever piece of every system, in the door and out to every customer. We track serial numbers on a certain type of product we sell, so we hope to use that function as well.

As I have been trying to get AllOrders up and running, tech support at Numbercruncher has been very good.
