QB2006 invoice numbering question

Is it possible to set QB to not number an invoice until it is printed?

I don't know, but what if the invoice is never printed?

Perhaps it was emailed or payment was received before the invoice was generated?

Could you give us an example of WHY you ask the question?

HeyBub

If I'm doing a bunch of small jobs for one customer I like to enter each one as a line item on an invoice, Then when finished, I print it. My old version (DOS Ver2.1) of QB used to show ***** as an invoice number until the invoice was printed. Along with giving me a list of invoices which looked just like your check register, I found this was an easy way of keeping track of jobs in progress.

I have not come up with a way to do this in QB2006 yet.

You can use the Pending function under the Edit menu. You can see a report of Pending invoices under the Reports > Sales menu.

You read my book. My service invoices have a date column. If I want to accumulate work performed over any specific time period I simply add time spent to a pending invoice. When I am ready to sent it out I finalize and print.

I don't see a Pending function under Edit.

under Edit>Prefs>Jobs...do I need to set create estimates to yes?

What is "progress invoicing"?

From inside an invoice, before printing it, choose Edit > Mark Invoice as Pending. The invoice will still have a number assigned but it won't post to accounts receivable or print yet. You can keep adding to it while its pending and use the Pending Sales report to view your WIP. When you are ready to finalize and print the invoice just open it, go to Edit > Mark Invoice as Final, and it'll post to A/R and you can print it.

This is a work-around to what you're used to doing.

Only if you plan to use estimates.

Its where you invoice (or "draw") against an estimate more than once.
