Reusing same CC account for new VISA card?

I trust I am not the only one in this NG with this problem....

So once again, my VISA card (along with many, so I am told) has been 'compromised' and I am getting a replacement in the mail shortly.

Am I correct in assuming as I think I read that I can deactivate Q's download ability in the current account , change the card number, reactivate, and I should be 'back in business' so that the same account is being used in Quicken for future transactions with this replacement card (same bank vendor, different card number)?

I would then think I would have to manually deal with (say, by deleting) the many "XFER PURCHASE BAL TO XXXXXXXXXXX" (the 'X' are exactly what the comment is in the downloaded transactions - I do not know the new card number yet, and they won't tell me until I physically receive the new card to activate) downloads I have been receiving into my register since this started happening, since each of these are showing up as a payment (although I haven't made any payments) since the VISA is behind the scenes moving these to a 'new' card account.

By reusing same account, I avoid creating a new one and keeping my records in the same CC account within Quicken, albeit with the new card number associated with it (which I don't mind doing if possible).

(As an aside, I found out about this happening since last weekend all of a sudden Quicken wanted to create an adjustment for several hundred dollars since VISA moved the balance at that time into their new account they created for me. I called and asked how come they didn't call or email me to let me know that this had happened, and they said 'security reasons'. Jeez. I would have thought an email to the account owner simple saying CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE would not be such a bad thing to have done. As it was, I spent an hour trying to figure how my account got out of sync by lots of manual scanning of transactions.....)

That's basically how I handled a new cc number last year. I did not get the annoying transactions that you are getting. I guess each cc company handles these things differently.

You may have to manually delete any duplicate or stray transactions the first month but once the dust settles you should be back on track.

Thanks for the reply Laura - but I actually as you probably might have known posted this to the wrong NG - sorry! Reposted to Quicken, and again, thanks for letting me know this should work.

I guess my caffine has not fully kicked in this morning. I am subscribed to both groups and did not even realize that you had posted to the wrong group--it's been a long week. As usual, glad to help.

Andrew, I'd think when you download the transactions from the new credit card all those "payments" will show up as "charges", thereby self-correcting.

Ah, maybe so! I do remember something like this when this last occurred (and I didn't use the same account); thanks! I'll be sure to check of course before doing anything drastic! (Still haven't received the new card yet....)

Well, answer is they didn't. First of all, reusing the same Quicken account worked fine; indeed, just had to deactivate the old, change the card number in the Account dialog box, and reactivate and download. A lot of transactions that were already there from the previous card had to be manually deleted from the download transaction box, but that was no problem after I verified each one had indeed already been in the register.

I *did* also, however, have the manually delete all those ""XFER PURCHASE BAL TO XXXXXXXXXXX" transactions as well, since indeed, the money was NOT moving out of the account. Simply clicked on the name field in the register to get them all in a row, deleted the two dozen or so manually, and lo and behold the balance now matched exactly to the 'online' balance and after a RECONCILIATION, all was well.

End of the saga.
