Instructions for installing Quickbooks Pro tell me to temporarily disable virus software while installing. Several postings have said it shouldn't be necessary... Why?

Because there are problems with _some_ anti-virus programs, but not all. Intuit is simply trying to cover all eventualities without driving you crazy with the exceptions.
