1 Step Update Error - removing??

Quicken 2008 Premier

When I upgraded to Quicken 2008, the system encourged me to try and get the value of my TIAA-CREF units on line. I had forgotten these do not have a symbol or code like other mutual funds or stocks. Quicken recognized the error and now I have an error report in the "One Step Update Summary"

The TIAA CREF account is not int he list of accounts to update and there is no check mark for the TIAA-CREF units in my Security List.

How do I get this error report to go away?

I can't figure out what you did (and you didn't supply the error message or error number that you received).

I have an account with TIAA-CREF and I can download to it and I have no problem.

TIAA-CREF only offers Web Connect downloads - which you normally can't use One Step Update to do (setting aside the possiblity of Express Web Connect, at least for the moment).

If you download from TIAA-CREF, they have their own ticker symbols for their securities (though you don't need a ticker symbol to save prices for securities). If you download from TIAA-CREF, their download should supply you with the prices of their securities; though I believe you can only get prices for the date you download.

If you are getting a One Step Update error and it appears to have something to do with ticker symbols for TIAA-CREF securities, chances are you have told One Step Update to download prices for the TIAA-CREF securities. You do that in One Step Update ... not in your Security List.

Near the very top of the One Step Update dialog is the choice, "Download quotes, .....", followed by a link, "Select quotes". Try clicking "Select Quotes" and making sure the TIAA-CREF securities are not checked.

Hi John:

I like to look at CREF stock units (~$272.85/unit these days). This is the "stock" fund under CREF vaiable annuity accounts at

I have never been able to download thisinto Quicken and must be doing something wrong. I have always manually entered the values (either daily, or by using the download link on the above page and specifying the date range. Is there any guidance you could provide as to how you do a web connect download of CREF using Q2008?

Han,

Have you looked at this link?

I found this by searching for Quicken on their website.

If you download your recent transactions from TIAA-CREF using web connect, the asset values of your CREF accounts will be updated. I'm not certain how much lag time there is on the asset values.

Since I am interested in only two CREF securities, I just copy and paste the values from the performance page at

That page is usually updated three or four hours after the NYSE closes, although it is sometimes longer. I find this easier than using web connect to download transactions just to get current values. Guy

As usual that messes things up by making new accounts and modifying existing ones with placeholders and what not. Apparently there is no way to download only new data?

I will keep doing things in the same way as before, just like Guy. My balances are probably a bit off because of minor errors, but mostly because the statements have difficulty in identifying the dividend TIAA pays. That is "hidden" in the difference between the last value and the current one. I don't know how often I complained to TIAA about this, and they keep saying they are in the process of upgrading their systems from multiple disparate bookkeeping programs.

I used to have to navigate to the correct CREF web page, but this morning (using Q2008) I am taken directly to the correct download page when I initiate a download by clicking the "Update Transactions" button at the foot of my TIAA-CREF account register.

As you're probably not already activated for download, I think you need to logon to your TIAA-CREF account, click the "Manage My Portfolio" tab, then scoll down to the "Download Account Data to Quicken" link in the "Take Action" section. Clicking the link (or the "Go" button) should take you to the "Download Data" page.

Once you initiate your first download, telling the process to "Open" the downloaded data (or Save, then tell Quicken to "Import" the "Web Connect file"), you should be able to assign the download to your TIAA-CREF account (if Quicken doesn't do it for you).

That's one of the problems. Somehow, the right accounts are not accessed. Maybe I have to remove online service connection between my TIAA-Cref accounts and then reinstitute them. But that seems like a lot of trouble right now.

I cannot tell you how to get the problem, but I call tell you it is not possible to download the CREF units -- what you can download is TIAA-CREF mutual fund data -- big difference. According the tech at TIAA-CREF I spoke to, the units do not have any symbol or CISP both of which are required for downloading into Quicken or getting even a quote say on Yahoo.

Since I only use this to track value for purposes of net worth, I decided to delete the account and make a single entry to show all the deposits made by a former employer. Not elegant, but functional.

Thanks to all that posted, I always learn from other's thoughts.

TIAA-CREF is very user unfriendly; and they put out information that is not correct.

A ticker symbol is not required to download prices or transactions to Quicken. (My bonds have no ticker symbol, but I have no trouble getting transactions and prices for those bonds downloaded from my financial institution.)

(And TIAA-CREF actually assigns dummy ticker symbols to their "securities".)

I think it is possible that a CUSIP number may currently be required for downloading transacations and prices to Quicken.

If this is true, I believe a "solution" is possible ... because I think the OFX specs allow for other identifiers than CUSIP number ... but it would probably take some co-operation between the financial institutions and the personal financial software manufacturers to make it work.
