How to Fix Broken Backup

I am using Quicken 2007 Basic edition.

Suddenly I am not able to do a Backup. I click File / Backup and Browse to a legitimate folder and click OK and get an error message telling me that the file was NOT backed up.

What I would like to do is

  1. export the my quicken account to a QIF file.
  2. uninstall quicken and then reinstall Quicken
  3. create a new account and finally
  4. import the QIF file that I previously created into the new account.

I would appreciate advise, Will this method work?

Thank You

If, when you say, "create a new account", you really mean, "create a new file", you could probably get your data from your existing file into a new one using your approach ... but you'd likely have to manually recreate some data too. And the export/import process probably isn't as simple to do as it is to write.

Your situation might be caused by data corruption that Quicken can't fix, but it's not the only possibility. Before going so far as the export/import approach, you might try a couple of other things.

If your current Quicken data fileset name is very long and/or contains non-alphanumeric characters, you could try shortening the name and removing any characters that are not alphabetic or numeric (including spaces, punctuation, etc.). You should be able to have Quicken "rename" your data to get the new name.

I would also double check the path where your Quicken data resides and the path to your backup folder for similar conditions, though the path doesn't seem as sensitive to length as the file name.

[You might want to include the paths and your Quicken data fileset name - and your operating system - in any subsequent posts on this topic.]

For file corruption, the first thing to try is to Validate a Quicken Copy of your data. If that Validated Copy does not exhibit the problem behavior, make that Validated Copy your regular data.

Thank you John.

Yes it's a new file that I am referring to, not a new account. I will try validating the data and check the filename.

Will post the results later.
