I have been using Quicken 2004 Basic for over 2 years.
Recently it has been adding duplicate payees in my Check Register drop-down list. Any idea why?

Duplicate payees do not indicate anything wrong; you may not want them, but Quicken can memorize multiple transactions for a given payee. If you do not want that, turn off the option ... and delete the duplicates from your Memorized Payee List.
