Problem migrating files

I've been running Quicken 6 Deluxe on a Win98 computer for several years. We recently got a WinXP pro computer and wanted to migrate the files. I installed Quicken 6 from the installation disk with no problems but I cannot get the old data from the old computer to the new computer. I have tried everything I can think of:

I've used backup (on 98) and restore (on XP)

I've used export/import (this successfully imported all the accounts but none of the transactions in those accounts - I even followed this with a restore from floppy attempt and that didn't work either).

I've tried opening the qdata file on the 98 computer over the network.

I've tried copying all the qdata (and all other similarly dated files) directly into the new quicken folder.

I've backed up to a folder, copied the folder, and tried restoring.

Nothing works - the best I can get is with the import - I get the list of all my accounts but they all have zero balances and no transactions.

The only thing I can think is that it is a FAT32/NTFS conlict. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Two questions:

  1. Can you generate a new data set on the new computer using the installation of Quicken 6?
  2. Did you try validating the file set on the old system before migrating the data set?

When you state Quicken 6, do you really mean the old Quicken 6 from 15 years ago, or do you mean Quicken 2006 (current version)?

I strongly doubt it's that.

Have you tried copying the files to a CD or to a USB thumbdrive or Zip drive if you have either?

And are you sure you're copying the right files? Just because they are Quicken data files, doesn't mean there aren't other Quicken data files on your old computer. When you said you got account names but zero balances, I wonder if you might be copying some old file that wasn't really your active data file. Just a thought.

One other thought: When you reinstalled Quicken, did you go online to get all the updates? The Quicken you installed on the new computer is the version same version as on the old, right? You used the same installation CDs?

And still one more thought: Lots of times people will upgrade to Deluxe after they buy Quicken Basic. Usually, there's an offer to "unlock" deluxe by paying extra online. If that's how you originally got Deluxe, then maybe all you installed on your new computer was Basic. The Deluxe may still need to be unlocked. All guesses on my part here. Hope one of 'em works.

After all the gymnastics I ended up re-entering by hand - only did from Jan 1, 06. ( If possible keep the old for reference.) Fully expect to do the same again - in about another 10-15 years. Q has a policy of preventing easy upgrades.

That's the easy way out. And are you re-using Quicken 6 or 2006? IIRC,

2006 won't read Quicken 6. You would have to buy a copy of Q2002 or something like that to first translate Q6 into Q2003, then gor to Q2006. It is said that Ebay is good for this.

You can get what Intuit calls "trial versions" of Quicken from Intuit for free for just this purpose. Tech support for the process is also free.

Me thinks that a little harsh. I've upgraded to every new version of Q since I started using it in

1989 over at least 4 different computers, and I've never thought it was hard. In fact, don't you think such a 'policy' would not be in the best interest on Intuit that counts of people like me to continue to upgrade to the newest versions and keep giving Intuit green dollars?
