Q06 new problem

I upgraded to Q06 from Q05 last week. Several times since then, Q06 has just disappeared during the Online Update process I don't recall ever having this happen in prior versions. Anybody else have this happen yet?

I can recall two instances where Quicken 2006 Premiere "disappeared from my computer. But I was not updating at the time. In one case, I was entering transactions in an account register. I don't remember what I was doing in the other case.

No error message, no complaining, just a sudden disappearance of the Quicken GUI from my computer screen.

Hi Steve,

It's been a while....

Is there any compelling reason(s) to upgrade from Q2005 H&B to Q2006 H&B? Just curious... I'm not suggesting there is not a reason(s), just wondering what they are.

Hi John, good to hear from you again. Bear in mind that I'm only using the Deluxe version, so my experiences are limited to that version. One thing that I have found useful is the ability to attach images to a transaction. Fortunately, Intuit chose not to put the images inside the database, they are stored in a subdirectory where your datafile resides. I could just see the database growing exponentially otherwise. As far as the Quicken user is concerned, that aspect is transparent, as the image storage and retrieval functionality is neatly embedded into the register. An example of how I found it useful, I just bought some plants from Home Depot. Since Home Depot has a 1 year guarantee on plants, I set up an alert on the transaction for one year out, and I attached a scan of the original receipt. When the year is up, I'll get an alert for that transaction, and I'll just go in and remove the image from that transaction. Conversely, if I need to utilize the guarantee during the year, I'll be able to find the copy of the receipt pretty quickly. Now, of course, I could easily file a scan of these receipts in a folder somewhere outside of Quicken, but this method helps manage that, and associates it with a specific register transaction. I find that pretty handy. They added some conveniences throughout the application for looking up transactions more quickly, but I haven't played with them much yet. They added some quick reporting popups within the context of a transaction. Pretty cool, but I don't know how much I'll end up using that feature.

My only gripe with Q06, outside of the occasional "disappearing program" glitch, is that they didn't enhance the snapshot graph setup on the home page. I was hoping they would have added all of the report customization options for snapshot graphs and reports that are provided in the full size reports and graphs. And since they didn't do this, there is still the bug with the "Exclude Internal" not being automatically selected when opening up a full size graph from a snapshot. The snapshot graphs correctly use an "exclude internal" transfers configuration, but when you double click the snapshot and it opens the full size graph, the full size graph defaults to "exclude all" transfers, thus producing a report/graph with different results. I'd rather not have the extra clicks to manually go in each time and change it back to "exclude internal". For those who don't follow why this is important to me, I use the Income/Expense graph to show my monthly cash flow. Through the proper selection of accounts to include in the setup, I can make Quicken treat a car payment as an expense in the month that it was paid. I basically turn the I/E graph into an Income/Expense/CashFlow hybrid graph, but it gives me an accurate quick snapshot view of how I'm doing each month.

I remember a discussion we had last year about whether you should upgrade to Q05... ;-) I'm not really sure what to tell you. I haven't really experienced enough new features yet to justify my upgrade. The image attachment thing is cool and useful for me, but I could have lived without it. Otherwise, I think it's probably still the same product with extra little "blings" here and there. I'd welcome other opinions on that, as I haven't spent a great deal of time with Q06 yet, so I could be overlooking some other really cool new features. But from where I sit now, I'd say I could take it or leave it. I'll use some of the new features, but was it worth the upgrade? I'm just not sure yet. I wouldn't have done it any other way though. Like some other users here on the newsgroup, I look forward to each upgrade, and I like to stay current. If you also subscribe to that approach, then grab yourself a copy of '06 and dig in...

Regards, Steve

Ok, let me just say this real quick... I just found the new popup register expense report to be very useful...

Steve:

It happens to me pretty consistently when I try to paste a transaction between Quicken files. I have a separate file tracking certain expenses, so when I copy a transaction from my credit cards file to my tax deductibles file Premier Home & Business 2006 reliably closes down.

OF COURSE, the one time I called tech support the copy and paste worked. I've just resigned myself to manually typing in transactions in my tax deductibles file till this is fixed.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the rundown. I'm sure I'll get '06 at some point... probably when it becomes an eBay bargain. '05 is working flawlessly for me, so there is really no need to change at this point. I have a very simple but effective paper filing system, so the document attachment feature isn't a big draw for me. Then again, as with much of this stuff, if I started using it, I might begin to find it essential. I'll follow the discussion here.

I remember well the "Exclude Internal" discussions!

John

Yup, just happened to me.

In the middle of a One Step Update, the program closed.

Not good.

In an effort to avoid the above problem, I "unchecked" all the accounts which downloaded prior to the disappearing account, and ran OSU, again.

This time, no disappearing Quicken.

Clearly, this is a bug which needs extermination.

Just for the record, my "disappearing" account is with Wells Fargo. Whether this is related, or it's just that this account is the last in my list, has yet to be determined.

Can you explain this more in depth as I don't understand what is happening?...regarding the previous post.

Thank you.

I have a number of different account, with different institutions.

The last one listed, when I do a One Step Update, is Wells Fargo.

Earlier, when I attempted a OSU, while transaction were being downloaded to WF, the program spontaneously closed. Three tries, three shutdowns.

I, then, went back, did another OSU, this time only asking that my WF accounts be updated. Everything went as expected.

I sure hope everyone experience this behavior is posting a bug report on the Intuit Web site, giving all available details.

I posted too soon. Last night, Quicken disappeared while it was doing an update.

FWIW: I just this evening had Q2005! exit uninvited while downloading historical prices (or immediately thereafter). I do not remember ever having had any version of Quicken do that (exit unexpectedly during *any* activity).

bummer... I don't recall it happening at all in Q05, but it's intermittent in Q06. I'd prefer it to be easily recreated...

John and Steve,

Could a virus cause this behavior? Any chance those experiencing this could have a common virus?

FWIW: Like John, I do not recall this ever happening to me, or reading about it here. It's always something... too bad the days of Intuit monitoring this newsgroup and responding are long gone.

Steve,

I wouldn't have thought so, but it was just a thought. Very strange that Qkn just shuts down.

Seems to me I had seen that in older releases (Q2000, Q99?) and believe it may have possibly have occurred during a shortage of resources.
