Quicken 08: Vista SideBar Gadget...?

After installing the new version of Quicken, I now have the Quicken-gadget on my sidebar. It doesn't show anything though, it's there -- but doesn't appear to be 'connected' to my Quicken file. Everything shows as '0', and clicking on 'Go to Billminder' does nothing. There don't seem to be any options to set for it, right-clicking doesn't show a settings function.

Anyone have it working?

I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but I got it from Intuit's support site and it looks reasonable:

"Vista Quicken Gadget does not display future transactions Answer

When the Quicken Gadget is first installed on Microsoft Windows Vista, it does not display upcoming transactions, even when a backed up Quicken file with those transactions is used.

To see upcoming transactions on a newly installed Quicken Gadget:

  1. Close Quicken. 2. Open the Quicken Gadget. Note: Quicken must be closed, and then reopened. 3. In the upper right of the Gadget, click the Refresh icon.

Upcoming transactions now appear."

Thanks... Sounded good, but had no effect. I also tried removing the file-password from Quicken, thinking maybe that was preventing the 2 from hooking-up, but no luck... Not a big deal, would like to use it if it works which at some point, I'm sure it will...

Q install asked if I wanted to install the sidebar gadget, I said "yes," and I have no sidebar gadget. When I go to add a sidebar gadget, the Q gadget is not in the list. I really hadn't planned to use it anyway, but I wanted to check it out at least. I could run install again, but the desire to experiment has left me ... at least temporarily. ;-)

I downloaded and installed Quicken 2008 Deluxe on Vista Ultimate (32-bit) and my sidebar gadget seems to be working fine. Where are your data files located (mine are under a folder I created in the Documents folder)? Maybe there are permission problems.

I'm not too sure that the gadget is really worth anything, though. On the "List" tab, all it seems to do is say a certain number of transactions are coming up, overdue, ready to print or send. The "Calendar" tab is worthless since I already have the default (better looking) Vista calendar gadget running and all the Quicken version does is add some color for days when things are happening. You have to click the "Go to Billminder" button on the bottom of the gadget to see what's actually happening. I'll give it a while and see if it grows on me. But, right now, I'd say I'll be turning it off in the near future.

Well, I think I see a benefit to the sidebar gadget. Billminder only pops up when you boot the machine (or log in). It looks like the gadget updates itself periodically. So, if you're one of the people who leave their machines running all the time, you can see that something's changed and either run Billminder or Quicken, itself, to do what needs doing.

Dumb question.

I never used Billminder in any version of Quicken. I have the sidebar installed but it has no data. Is there something I do in Quicken to flag something to show-up in Billminder so I can see if this tool is useful to me? In other words, where does it get its data?

Hmmm... wondered what Billminder was -- found it in the Quicken start-menu folder, tried to run it but it errors out -- sounds like the Gadget needs it...

When you set up a scheduled transaction within Quicken, there should be an option to Remind Me some selected number of days before the transaction is due. Billminder should be picking up on that. If it's not, close Quicken, find the QW.RMD file (on my Vista setup it's in C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Roaming\Intuit\Quicken\Data), delete that file, start up Quicken, close it, and run Billminder from the Quicken program group (under Start | Quicken). That should bring up Billminder with any remindable transactions showing. Make sure the Options menu on that Billminder display is set the way you want it.

A problem with the sidebar gadget having only a summary of the *number* of items needing attention is showing itself to me, now. This morning, it was saying I had 8 upcoming transactions. Billminder showed none. I deleted the QW.RMD file, opened my main Quicken account file, closed it, and ran Billminder. It now showed 3 upcoming transactions. I completed those and left Quicken. Even after a long time, the gadget still showed 8 upcoming transactions. So, I opened my other Quicken account file and closed it. Now the gadget shows 13 upcoming transactions and Billminder shows 3. I'm going to have to research this some more.

I do use scheduled transactions, however mine are all set to automatically enter 30 days in advance. I use this to monitor cash flow in my checking accounts verses other tools Quicken has - basically I have a one month forecast. This would likely explain why I don't see anything.

Thank you for your help.

You could also check Quicken's Alert Center. I don't know how you've got things set up, so the most standard way of getting there would be from Tools | Set Up Alerts. Look in the General | Reminders area inside that.

I can't get BillMinder to run at all. Though maybe the steps you provided would clear that up, no luck. When I try, I get a Windows Error box (Vista Ultimate 64 bit system). The contents of the error:

You should really scour the Microsoft newsgroups for Vista or the MS knowledge base with that error type to see if it is a generic problem with Vista x64 and Windows apps.

Do you happen to have Logitech keyboard/mouse management software installed on your machine? Neither Billminder & Sidebar Gaget, nor the Q Home Inventory module not all the bells and whistles). After much trial & error I have narrowed my conflict to this software. Quicken support has no resolution, stating that it is a 'Logitech problem'. Currently in ongoing contact with Logitech. Now that I've reliably isolated my conflict, it's not a big issue for me. I don't really use Billminder (or the SB Gadget), and simply disableLogitech to run QHI. All of the modules run fine with Logitech disabled. Don't know if any of this applies to you, but it may help someone.

Well, I can't figure it out. The Sidebar Gadget still shows 13 upcoming transactions. Billminder shows none for my primary account and 2 for my secondary account. Opening each of those two files shows me that Billminder appears to be correct. I have no idea why the Gadget is showing 13 transactions, and there doesn't seem to be any way to find out what it's actually seeing.

I do have software for a Logitech mouse -- thanks for the info!

I also don't use Quicken Alerts. I have found most of the alert messages did not apply in my case - so I turned them off years ago.
