Side-by-Side

I am unable to run quicken 2007 primer on Vista Ultimate. Quicken worked well for about 3 weeks since I installed Vista and all of the sudden I could not even open the program anymore. No chance. What shall I do to fix this issue? This is the error I am receiving.

C:\program files\quicken\qw.exe

The applicati Activation context generation failed for

"C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\SMARTT~1\FPLACE.DLL". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis

Please help.

Start by reading other people's posts on the subject of Quicken on Vista. There are at least 3 other threads on this issue in this newsgroup.

By definition you are an "early adopter" if you are embracing Vista at this time (and for the next 6 months). These kinds of problems go hand-in-hand with being an early adopter. If you are unprepared to face such problems you should choose not to be an early adopter.

Very likely Intuit will not fix Vista-related problems in Quicken 2007; you'll probably have to wait until 2008 (Christmas 2007) and pay money for a version that works with Vista. That's how Intuit is - any excuse to extract more $ from the customer base.

Can't help, but I think"assemblies" are associated with program installation for programs which use "managed code", also known as ".net". I think vista uses .net v3, which I think also can be installed on Win XP, though I don't know of any benefit from doing that.

Assemblies can specify specific versions of dll files, via a technique known as "side by side" or "sxs". the idea seems to be to allow different programs to use specific versions, without requiring all programs to use the latest version. But that's all I know, sorry.

How does one search the newsgroup for such threads? I am using OE and can only search what I've downloaded. Is there a way to do it with the browser or some other way?
