Quicken 2005 Premier and Vista Ultimate Problems

I'm running Quicken 2005 Premier under Vista Ultimate RTM. I might be jumping the gun on this since Vista's not yet widely available. But, since Intuit released a "Using Quicken on Microsoft Windows Vista" Help Bulletin (just search for Vista in their Support area), I'd thought I'd pass on my experiences.

Firstly, in that bulletin, Intuit claims Quicken 2007 runs fine with their latest patches (R2 -- they probably wrote the bulleting before OR came out) under Vista. I have no knowledge of that version. However, they also claim Quicken 2005 and 2006 only have problems with accessing the Help files (scripting errors -- no fix) and with updating the Quicken version (need to run the manually downloaded patch as Administrator). With my Quicken 2005 Premier, which I manually updated from the initial install to OR while NOT an Administrator (without problem), my Help system seems to works fine. Where I do have a problem is with One-Step Updates (not program updates -- just downloading information from my financial institutions). One-Step Update works correctly. But, when I exit Quicken, it faults (usually -- I've had one or two cases where it didn't) and warns me that my transactions might not have been saved. AFAIK, all my transactions have always survived this. But, it's worrisome.

Secondly, I've got a problem with the scroll wheel on my Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (part of Microsoft's Laser Desktop 6000). Regardless of whether I scroll up or down in a register or anywhere else in Quicken, the window always scrolls up. I have to use the scroll bars on the side of the window to scroll down. Of course, this could be a problem with the mouse, the mouse software, or with Vista. But, since I see this behavior only in Quicken, I don't think so.

Other than that, Quicken 2005 seems to work fine under Vista Ultimate RTM. I just wish Intuit would acknowledge the issues I have (and which Vista has passed on to Microsoft and, I assume, Intuit). I worry about my data integrity because of those error messages. But, so far, things look fine.

David: Just as a cautionary note, I thought I'd pass on to you a problem I had using Quicken under Vista and XPx64. I posted to this group back in November, but no one else reported having the same problems. Here's what I ran into:

I've got Windows XPx64 and Vista (RC1 Build 5600) dual booting. I reinstalled Quicken (06, Basic) on the Vista partition. I already had it working fine on x64. As best I could tell, Quicken was working fine on both OSes at first. I could open and save in x64 and then open in Vista and all the stuff I had updated while in x64 is updated in Vista. And vice versa.

Now, however, Vista seems to be stuck on an old version -- for want of a better term -- of the Quicken date file, missing recent transactions, etc. I even tried opening the Quicken file while in Vista by double-clicking on the file that I know is the working Quicken file and had just been updated while under x64. But it still brings up the old file (without the recent transactions). And when I closed out Quicken in Vista, that file remained unchanged (the date of the last revision remained the same). And yes, I did refresh the folder view to make sure.

Recently, I tried changing the password to the data file while using Quicken in x64. But when I tried to open the very same data file in Vista/Quicken, it made me give it the old password.

Keep in mind this is the SAME data file. I know where it's stored, and while in Vista go searching for the file first. I can tell from the date on the file that this is the one I'd just updated while in XPx64. Then I double-click the file and it opens in Quicken, but it has OLD data.

I haven't tried Quicken in Vista since late November because I haven't had time to try to fix the error. Just wanted to let you know I had a problem back then and I'm not sure whether other people will face the same thing. So far, no one else has reported it AFAIK.

Meanwhile thanks for the mention of the support file. I'll go looking for it.

I've just had the same problem using Vista 32; I synchronize my quicken files between my XP laptop and my Vista desktop machines, so when the problem of missing transactions came up I thought that I might have overwirtten the more current file with the older version. About four days transactions were missing. But I've checked the file dates and the dates of othr synchronized but non-Quicken files and it appears that I didn't make that error. I'm using Q2007, R3 on both machines.

The sychronization is via a batch file (which I've been using for many years without difficulty) which uses XCOPY to overwrite the older files only when the replacement file is newer.

I hope this isn't going to occur again. The transactions all came back when I did an on-line update. I then "validated the wholse file and found no further errors.

Interesting. Seems like there might be a problem Intuit and MS should be looking into.

DP & formerprof,

Is it possible that somehow the access controls on your Quicken data files got messed up? I had similar problems with other data and turned out that with all the moving of files from system to system, drive to drive, and directory to directory, I ended up with weird inherited permissions on my folders and files. It sounds almost like you have only Read permissions on your own data instead of Full permissions. Try right-clicking on all your Quicken data files (one at a time), selecting Properties and looking at the Security tab. The top box of "Groups or User Names" should have (about) three groups: Administrators, System, and you. All of them should have Full Control.

Just thought I'd report that the scrolling problem I had with my mouse wheel in Quicken seems to have been caused by my Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse

6000. I just replaced that with a Logitech Comfort Duo Desktop and I can now use the scroll wheel properly in Quicken. Quicken is still faulting 99.9% of the time when I close the program following a One-Step Update (still no confirmation from Intuit even though they've gotten daily dump reports sent to them from me for almost two months across two clean OS installs). I've also had sporadic cases where Billminder wouldn't come up or it would come up with nothing to report. It's probably a permissions thing. Running it once manually with Administrator privileges and running Quicken from there fixes it.

Hi, David.

Thanks for the report.

My MS Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (part of the Wireless Laser Desktop 6000) still has the scrolling problem - in Quicken Reports only. It's OK in the Checking Register and everywhere else in Quicken 2007 Basic on Vista Ultimate x64 RTM.

It must be a conflict between the Quicken program and the IntelliPoint drivers (version 6.1), because this is the only place where I'm having a problem. An older MS wireless ball mouse has the same problem when running with these latest drivers; I haven't tried it recently with older drivers, but it worked right for years in previous versions of Quicken and Windows.

Has your system pulled down an update to the mouse driver over the last couple of days? In one of the Microsoft Communities, there was a post that Microsoft released an update to the 32-bit (at least) driver through Windows Update (not the mouse site). That supposedly fixed the problem where the mouse driver wouldn't let Vista Ultimate start up the screen saver. I don't know if that update would have any affect on the Quicken scrolling issue or even if there's an update to the x64 version.

Hi, David.

No, I've heard nothing about any mouse driver more recent than IntelliPoint

6.1.

Windows Update shows nothing, and Update Driver (in Device Manager) also says that I'm running the newest available. It's Driver Version 6.10.155.0, dated 11/7/2006. As it says in my Sig, I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 RTM.

I haven't used the screen saver recently. I've forgotten why, but I turned it off (set it to Never) a week or two ago.

The screen saver issue doesn't bug me, but the scrolling issue does!

Hi, Clark.

Nope. I was at Microsoft last week, along with nearly 2,000 other MVPs from

90 countries around the world, but we were kept so busy on topics that MS wanted to discuss that we didn't get a chance to ask some of OUR most pressing questions. :^{

I still don't even know if the problem is in the mouse driver or in the Quicken program. But thanks for the reminder. I'll try to get some more information about it.
