The 3-year quotes cycle

I'm still on Q2005 and the download quotes seems to have stopped producing data, although there has been no error message. Could be a server issue, but I'm wondering: Does the service simply stop when your privilege has expired? Or is there a message? Thx,

It's still supposed to be working for Q2005, but the servers are apparently often screwed up.

I find that if I'm in the "Portfolio" view and hit the "Download quotes" button enough times, the numbers will eventually come through.

I have to use the "Update" button on the main toolbar to download stuff from Fidelity, and that usually works even when the stock quotes don't.

But not for long.

Waiting for me in the mail this evening was a QW2008 CD from Intuit with the note

"As of April 30, 2008, Online Services and live technical support for Quicken 2005 products will no longer be available."

They offer to sell me QW2008 Deluxe for $40, but Office Depot/Max (forget which) is currently selling TurboTax Deluxe + QW2008 Deluxe with a $60 mail-in rebate, so the net price of the two is only $45.

Best Buy is offering the combo for $60, but without needing any rebates.

Heh, thanks, yep, just got a similar letter today. Same expiration date, April 30, for quotes download. A discount coupon was included (for 2008 Premier), so I went to Amazon to compare prices. Found immediately an avalanche of negative user experiences. Uh oh. Gotta do some heavy research now. Starting with more careful perusal of this list. -Ron

I noticed that too, although it looks there's been a raft of updates to QW2008 already and the gnashing of teeh seems to have settled down, but that might just mean that people have gone away mad.

Still, the idea of switching to MS Money gives me the creeps.

I never used Q2005, but liked Q2006. I played some with the test version of 2007, then bought 2008. Despite everything that may have een said, I like it. Most of the distaste (as always) is about getting used to a different GUI, and about the waste of screen space that every new version seems to produce. For me, 2008 is definitely better than 07 and even 06. But give me back of most of 06's interface, please.

I bought and installed 2008 a few days ago, only because it was available her at a very good price. I had planned to keep 2007 and skip 2008 (I usually upgrade every other year or so).

My perception is that there is hardly any difference to me between

2007 and 2008. Not to argue with you, but perhaps I'm missing something. I'm curious about what you see in 2008 that is "definitely better" than 2007.

To me the screen real estate seemed not as bad in 2008 as in 2007, and there seems to be increased flexibility and utility in the tags/classes feature.

OK, thanks. To me, the screen usage is the same (at least for the way I work), and I've never used the tags/classes feature.

Amen to that, but maybe I can get over it. I bit on the 2008 offer thinking that maybe the securities update had improved. No such luck. If anything it is worse. Had 2008 maybe 24 hours and have still not been able to get an update.

I just installed it and got a full (and possibly correct) download on the second try.

Did you check Friday's numbers against Friday's close? Mine are estimates and do not match. I renamed my qph, let Quicken rebuild it, and updated again. And *still* the last accurate numbers I have are for Wed like I had before my 2008 upgrade. Thurs and Fri are estimates, even though the update dialog says that ### stocks were updated.

Looks like you're right, they didn't actually get updated from Quicken's download.

My entries didn't say "est" because I'd already downloaded closing quotes from etrade and updated my accounts from that data, so I didn't notice that Quicken hadn't done anything 'til I actually looked at the data.
