Upgraded Q04 to Q07, no issues

Just a note that I updated my Quicken 2004 to Quicken 2007 (both Deluxe) this past weekend to avoid the sunsetting of the on-line feature.

The upgrade went fine and fast. Quicken didn't make any changes to my settings (Billminder stayed off, my home page remained my checking account register). It also updated itself to the R4 release. My only complaint is the 4 junk-ad icons it put on the desktop.

I don't use some of the fancier features. It's mostly just checking, credit cards, 401K, and some loans (all paid off now!!) I backed everything up first to multiple sources.

This is under Win2K.

I tried to use the newer OneStep update that works with WebConnect sites, but it didn't work with mine. Possibly because my bank is using a new logon process for safety. The password is entered on a separate screen after it verifies my computer is safe. If it doesn't recognize it, it goes to a different screen where I have to type in an alternate password by clicking on a mini-keyboard.

I did the same except QBasic 2004 to QBasic 2007. No issues, smooth as silk.

I did have one question: I had to move Quicken to my WinXP laptop because my desktop still runs on WinME. Obviously, my laptop doesn't have a separate numerical keypad built into the keyboard like my desktop. But after all these years, I've gotten used to using the "+" and "-" keys to advance thru category and class choices, as well as check numbers and dates in my register. Are there laptop keys that perform this function?

Stephen:

You could always hit the "-" key two keys to the right of 0 to decrement, shift "-" gets you "+" which increments.

Do laptops still offer the ability to make a numeric keypad out of some of the number keys? They used to. You'd have to hit one of the funtion keys and then some keys on the right side would become the equivalent of a numeric keypad. This would have been in the general location of the IOP keys and in the keys directly below them on the two rows underneath. In fact, if your laptop does this, it probably has small numbers inscribed on the keys in a different color like green or red. I never liked that function and have always been a big fan of the real keypad. I'm always amazed that there are a lot of people, possibly a majority of computer users, who never used the keypad. Some raised mouse platforms (to prevent repetitve stress injuries) are designed to cover up the keypad, which doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Yes. Thinkpads can be put in the Numlk mode where 789 uio jkl m,. are a keypad. But the keys don't line up and won't make a touch keypad user terribly happy. USB is the way to go for them.

I agree, but some laptoppers don't have the space for a USB keypad or don't want to lug it around with them. Just as a lot of people who use laptops do not use a mouse. But if the OP's setup has space for a USB keypad, that would definitely be prefereable.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

note to Bob,

no need to hit "Shift" and "-" to add increments, just hit "+".

However, this only works for advancing dates or check numbers. I'm looking to advance categories or classes when I'm entering a transaction. USB number keyboard would be overkill for just that. I was hoping there was another option, not a big deal.

Thanks again for the responses.

Thank you for the '+' and '-' info, because I do prefer using the NumPad when possible!

I've been using Ctrl+DownArrow or Ctrl+UpArrow (with Quicken XG2006). Hope this works for you.

I had exactly the opposite result. My direct connects are all failed and I can't reestablish them. I've removed and added the account (seemly successfully) and when I go to update, the only option I ever get is to update the financial institutions. I add passwords to the vault. Nothing.

Weird thing is everything was working fine in '04. 'Course, my upgrade was from 04 basic to 07 premier. I'm wondering how hard converting to M$Money will be ...

From what I've heard, Money has a 2-year sunset, so you'll have to upgrade even more often.
