Why do windows have to close!

This is more of a complaint than a question, but for the last X number of releases of Quicken, one of the things I requested was that windows not close when another one opens. There are many times I need at least two windows open to do comparisons. I suppose, of all the user suggestions they included in Q2006, they did not include this one. It is so bad, that if I have a report window open and I need the Quicken calculator to check some numbers, the window I need the numbers from closes.

I realize in this case I can use the Windows calculator or a physical one, but it is so frustrating when trying to do things that the information you need is no longer available until I close the new window!

I just noticed that if I open the Quicken calculator and then the window, they both stay open. That helps a little. And I guess I should mention, when I say open, I mean viewable (not minimized).

I agree. This Quicken feature disappeared long ago, and it was a shame.

There have been times when I have had to print a report, or export it to Excel, so that I could look at it and another screen at the same time.

Other workarounds include printing to a PDF file (requires Adobe Acrobat, not just the reader), or using a third-party program to capture a window from the screen as an image. None of these are entirely satisfactory, although bringing a report into Excel does enable it to be manipulated and used for further calculation.

Or Q2006 which has built in PDF printing.

Or for versions prior to Quicken 2006, any of the free/low cost PDF writers. My favorite is PDF995 from

for only $9.95without adverts or free with adverts in the PDF file.

This is really funny--Q2006 has this neat little modification that allows you to save statements with the accounts. I just did that and then tried to reconcile the account--can't keep the statement open to fill out the necessary information for the reconciliation!!!! I still have to open the statement in a separate Adobe Reader to use it.

Yep. Quicken eliminated their multiple window capability when they went from Q98 to Q99. They also began to encrypt the data base, making it uncompressible. I've stayed with Q98 ever since, occassionally contemplating upgrading, then deciding against it. At this point, I'd still love to upgrade to get the newer features, but am reluctant to subject myself to what is likely to be a major re-learning curve given the number of interface and function changes since Q98.

I use QIF imports to track mutal fund reinvestments, etc fo rmy 401K accounts, and handle stock price imports manually (using NetStock and exporting to Quicken format, then importing). I enter all of my checking/savings transactions manually and don't really need to do direct or web connect to save a few minutes a month reconciling a bank statement.

Had Intuit added its new features without removing the useful older ones, I would have gladly continued to upgrade every year or two. As it is, I'm still relatively satisfied with what I'm using and am somewhat averse to supporting Intuit's recent trend toward extorting money from users and financial institutions for no apparent value add.

Ok, I've done my annual rant against Intuit's de-featuring and will climb back down from my soapbox now.
